Please tell me the good, the bad and the ugly. We've read about some pretty bad side effects and asked our doctor to hold off with the Reglan until the second opinion comes on Tuesday. They found out she has really bad reflux, the congestion is there because it's all swollen inside her. So in addition to the Prevacid they started Friday, they began Reglan yesterday. We asked last night they discontinue until a child GI specialist takes a look at her and gives their opinion on meds. They scheduled their GI dr. for Tuesday, we are looking tomorrow to get someone from the local children's hospital to come in for an opinion. My husband is a psychiatrist and the major possible future side effect is something he's seen quite a bit of (the involuntary movements and I'm forgetting the medical name for it) and doesn't wish it upon anyone much less his own daughter.
Finally she seems to be outgrowing her sleep apnea and now just desats during some feedings due to this congestion from the reflux. Weird thing is the first sleep study didn't even show it, we only repeated it again to make sure the sleep apnea was gone, which it is and now the reflux is there. Once it's under control, she'll be discharged.
Did any of your doctors refuse to give it because of the side effects? Please tell me your experience. TIA
Re: Reglan
I stopped the Reglan after reading about the new black box warning; Max had been on it for about a year at that point, and the warnings were for people on it longer than 10 weeks.
My pedi told me that those issues had exclusively affected elderly patients who were on it, that there was no indication of it causing the same problems in children, but I chose to play it safe and stop the med. He's been doing great ever since! (But we never had any issues with it, either)
Robbie was never on it (we discussed it several times, but never did it) but I know several kids on my micro-preemie board whose kids had neurological affects from it. Fortunately I believe all of theirs went away when they discontinued use, but it's still scary.
There is also erythromycin (sp?) that can help motility w/o all the scary side effects of Reglan.
My Blog
Ruby was on Reglan for about 4 months. When she wasn't on it, she would have bradys and turn blue when she refluxed, so we didn't really have a choice.
That being said, we had no negative side effects whatsoever and we were able to dc the medication when her reflux calmed a bit...
Good luck!
