anyone make baby food?

I honestly don't know much about it but am intrigued by the idea. For those who have done it, is it time or labor intensive? What supplies are needed? Did you register for any of the supplies? Are there any books you recommend to learn more? TIA!

I make Ben & Kate's food for the most part but I do some store bought food as well.

I bought myself a steamer, this is the one I have and I LOVE it.

You can get away with a drop-in one that is cheaper from Bed Bath & Beyond that just goes into your regular pot.

I also have a mini food processor that works great and is big enough for both the kid's food.  I have this one:

To store the food I have these and they work great:

You can def. check your local library that is what I did before I bought any books bc some are better than others.

You can private message me if you have any more questions.

  • I'm making most of our DDs' food and it's pretty simple.  I have a couple books, but honestly, I just use www.wholesomebabyfood.com for the info I need.  I tend to batch things...mainly steam stuff in the microwave and then puree it in our existing food processor.  I then put it in ice cube trays and freeze.  Once they are frozen, I just transfer the cubes to Ziploc freezer bags and store (the quart size is just right for a tray of food cubes).  I have four ice cube trays so that's my limiting factor in the amount of things I make at one time.  I haven't made much lately so this weekend I did sweet potatoes, carrots, and zuccini on Saturday and peas, green beans, peaches, and eggplant yesterday.  I like freezing things individually and then can make combos when I prepare meals (e.g., 2 cubes carrots, 1 cube peas).

Oh, I do tend to use a couple shortcuts--instead of always using fresh fruits or veggies, I will use frozen veggies or sometimes canned.  You want to make sure you're using no salt added versions though.  Frozen stuff can be a little tricky though since many brands add salt to frozen peas.  I have found some that don't though.  For fruits, the big shortcut is to serve natural applesauce.  Also, I use canned fruit that is packed in juice--no syrup.  Be aware that it seems that some brands are starting to market "no sugar added" fruits.  At first it seems like a great thing, but they are sweetened using Splenda.

  • I made a lot of their food and it was easy... just put it in the blender with a little bit of water
  • Check out wholesomebabyfood.com.  It's really easy to make baby food.  I used a magic bullet blender because you could also steam the food in the cups then put it straight on the blender.  Just add water to get the consistency you want.
  • I make most of it, but buy some things like cereals, prunes, and peas.  I am not ready to be blending prunes and peas.  I did not register for anything.  I make food in big batches so I really only make it about once/week right now.  I steam or bake the fruits and veggies, then puree them in my blender and freeze it in ice cube trays.  Once frozen I transfer to plastic freezer bags.  I follow wholesomebabyfood.com  The only things I've bought are the ice cube trays with covers.
