NBR: How do you do Christmas with your fam?

My family has always gotten each other lots of gifts for Christmas, but now that my brother and I both have kids, I feel like maybe we should change things. Rather than get gifts for my mom, dad, brother, and SIL, I would like to draw names for the adults so that we each only have to get one person a gift. I feel like this way we could focus on the little ones instead. (And, DH and I just can't afford to go crazy with Christmas this year.) What do you do?

    In both my family and DH's family the adults draw names and we all buy for the kids. Works out well for us!

    With my one side of the family, everyone brings a $25 gift card to where ever (we usually end up seeing ones from Best Buy, Amazon.com, Target, etc).  You make sure it's a normal size gift card (Best Buy & Target make silly shaped ones - you can't get those), and then once everyone is there, they are all wrapped in the same wrapping paper. Then, we play some silly game (it's never the same each year, just whatever we feel like playing) and you get to grab a gift card.  Once they are all taken, we open it up, and then usually end up trading - LOL.  It's silly & fun, and we are only spending $25 per person (so, between DH & I, we spend $50, but we also get $50 in gift cards back).

    Our families aren't very big.  We get each person in our immediate family a gift (My side - my parents, my sis/bil/2 nieces  DH's side - his p's, 2 brothers, their wives and each of their 2 children.)  My nieces usually get a box of gifts from us.

    We don't have a lot of kids in the family but we do have large families. DH and I both only buy for our immediate families (parents and siblings). Everyone else we just do a large family dinner with but don't really worry about presents.

    We don't exchanged with my brother/sil anymore cause they have a kid and we have one so we just buy for the others kids.  We still exchange with my sister cause she is 21 and still in college so no kids for her yet.

    We get gifts for just the kids unless you don't have kids. One of my brothers isn't married or have kids so we get him a gift but for my brother who has two kids we just get the kids something. Ohh and my parents get a gift

    My family:  My siblings, their SOs, dh and I all pick names so we only have two gifts to buy.  We also buy my parents each a gift and my only niece a gift.

    DH's Family:  We buy a gift for MIL, FIL, SIL and dh's two nephews.

    This may change when my siblings start having more children.

    This...we both come from LARGE families...so we draw names for the adults and then we buy for the kids.  We use to just buy for everyone - with a limit of $10-20 but that has gotten to be so much for us.

    Not to mention that I have to ship gifts across the country...so that limits my buying / wrapping / shipping time....

    EDIT:  Everyone buys gifts for their parents and grandparents ...regardless of the name draw...

    In both families we went to gift exchanges. On my side we include all kids over 1. On dh's they don't include kids. Last year my family nixed the gift exchange all together and just spent xmas eve together like always. We haven't decided whether to bring it back this year or not. We are nixing gifts on dh's side this year.

    Oh, I must be tired....I read that as "so we get him a GIRL."  LOL

    For all the siblings their SO's and two older cousins we do a Secret Santa (though some people have issues keeping it a secret, whatev)...at Thanksgiving we all pick a name out of a hat and that's the person we buy Christmas gifts for...it's also the person you buy a bday present for. We had to do this b/c Christmas was seriously getting out of control once we started having kids. Plus, it really was just becoming a big gift card exchange. We still buy gifts for the kids, parents and grandma.
