MIL guilt-tripped me for feeling sick last night

Saturday DH and I did A LOT of stuff around the house. So much so that I was basically out of commission on Sunday.

Well, Sunday we were supposed to go over to his parents' house to visit with MIL's aunt and uncle who were in town for the weekend. Don't get me wrong, these are very nice, kind people and I was excited to see them, but the in-laws live 45 minutes away and we were only going over for dessert.

So I suck it up and we go. After about an hour of visiting, I was perfectly miserable. I gave DH a look that said "we have to go, NOW!" So as the men-folk were getting up to head to the TV for Sunday night football, MIL asks DH if he is going to stay and watch with them. He apologized and said no, that I was feeling sick and wanted to go home.

She gives me this look, and then, in her sugary-sweet (read: fake) voice, asked "Why did you bothercoming since you were feeling so sick? You know, aunt and uncle are only in town once a year and it would have been nice for [DH] to have some time to visit with them."

Then of course she threw in the gem about us living so far away and that it wouldn't be an issue if we lived closer to them. "Besides, it would be nice if you lived closer so we could come and visit Aric more!"

Whatever, MIL. At least we showed up!

  • Ugh, sorry you had to deal with that. ?

MIL will be like, aw I'm sorry you feel bad.. but then make me feel bad about missing whatever function later.

We missed a family reunion on a Sunday after just going to one on the Saturday before. ?MIL had said she understood.. and then the following week would make comments about the stupid reunion and then say "oh, that's right YOU weren't there"?

  • If you hadn't shown up, she would have made a comment about that also.  You wouldn't have won either way.  MILs sometimes have trouble with the fact that loyalties have changed post-marriage.

  • So why don't they move closer to you, then?

Butt-face. I probably would've burst into hormonal tears on the spot and/or screamed my head off at her.  Sorry she did that to you ... jerk-monkey.
