my midwife just said to be careful of fish high in mercury. i usually eat wild salmon (less mercury) and if I'm doing canned tuna - chunk light vs albacore. albacore is bigger and has more time in it's lifespan to build up mercury in it's system. the monteray bay aquarium offers some tips on some of the safer fish to eat. enjoy!
Even my Japanese pregnancy books say to eat certain fish in moderation: tuna, shark, and a couple others (I don`t like fish so haven`t really paid too much attention). For those fish they recommend no more than 80g a week.
According to the FDA, the only fish that you should NOT eat while pregnant is shark, tilefish, swordfish, and king mackerel. So, in moderation, all shellfish (clam, shrimp, oyster, lobster, mollusks, ect.), canned fish, small ocean fish, and farmed-raised fish are safe. Lol I really like fish, so I made sure to find out what I can eat!
Agreeing with PPs - the older and bigger the fish, the more mercury. I'll also add to stay away from swoedfish.
Smaller, younger fish (tilapia for example) don't have time to absorb enough mercury to be too dangerous. That said, the general recommendations are no more than 1-2 servings per week of the low mercury fish. I think it's something like 1-2 a month of higher mercury.
