I am sneaking over here from the 3rd tri board because we just had our shower and now have a mountain of clothes and things to wash for LO. How many people used regular detergent on your baby items? Did your child have any reactions? Are there some things that can still be used with regular detergent? I don't want to have my LO breaking out but I also don't want to break the bank with expensive specialty detergents if not neccesary. I'd rather use the money on things I don't have yet, like diapers
.
TIA
Re: Detergent question
I used Dreft on the clothes because it was given too me. We've used it up and now I'm using Purex Baby that was given to us also.
But, when that's gone I'll just wash it in regular detergent. I cuddle her all the time and she doesn't break out from my clothes.
You could also get something like All Free and Clear which is cheaper than Dreft.
We use All Free and Clear detergent and bounce free and clear fabric softner sheets. So far no problems!
obviously your baby will be different than everyone else's so you wont know until u try it
its not going to hurt them to try it once- you should be able to tell if u dont use dreft on your clothes and she/he seems fine
i knew that she wasnt allergic to scents and stuff bc i still wash mine and dh's clothes in regular tide and she never broke out from being next to us- plus dh uses cologne regularly for work and it doesnt bother her to be on him- so i have a bottle of dreft and once thats gone, i am prob done with buying separate bottles of detergent
Good point! All of our newborn clothes went straight into the "no longer fits" box having never been worn.
This is what I thought, but was getting mommy guilt at the thought of Jocie breaking out because I was being cheap. I think I'll buy some of the free and clear choices to start and go from there.
I definately won't wash everything to begin with, but I have been given alot of hand-me-downs as well and figure it won't hurt to wash them.
Thanks again!
I use All Free & Clear. Dreft is too pricey.
You could make your own detergent, its cheaper and more sensitive.
2/3 bar soap (i use Dr Bronner's Unscented Baby Mild)
? Cup 20 Mule Team Borax
? Cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda.
Directions:
Grate the Bar soap with a grater or use a food processor. (Approximately 2/3 of a bar of soap will make 1 cup of grated soap.)
Add the ? cup of Borax and ? cup of washing soda to the grated soap.
Shake and/or mix well, then use 1-2 Tablespoons per load.
We use the Method F&C on all laundry, including his cloth diapers. DS has never had any issues. You definitely don't need specialty crap like Dreft, but I would suggest trying to use a free and clear variety of whatever brand you like (almost always the same price as regular.)?

I use All Small and Mighty on just his clothes and blankets right now. Like PP I still wash our clothes in Tide and he doesn't break out from me cuddling him.
I got the detergent on sale at WalMart with the extra 25% free and when it's gone I'll probably try Tide.
