3rd Trimester

Opinions needed!!(kinda long)

ok so here it the deal i started contraction on Tue the 22 went to L&D found out i was going into pre-term labor they gave me 2 pills and 1 shot to stop me from contracting it worked for about 3 hours the first time then i started contracting again so to make a long story short i have now been in the hospital for 5 days they are not letting me go home because every time the meds wear off i start going into labor i am currently 34 weeks i have had the steroids to strenghen baby's lungs but i'm getting frustrated with all this medicine and also because they will let me go as much as 2-3 hours of bad contractions before they stop me they have had to give me 4 pills and the shot for the past 2 nights to stop me labor and on top of everything the docs (i have seen like 5 different ones)all say that baby would do good if born now but they would like to see me get to 36-37 weeks but they all also say that they don't think i'll even make it to 35 weeks with the way my body is reacting to the meds

so my questions is do u think i should keep taking the meds or stop and deliver ? because i have had tons of people tell me to go on and deliver

every test that they have ran has came back neg they can not tell me why i'm going into labor except that my body is ready so i dont understand what the deal is any openion or advice is greatly appreciated.TIA

  • Keep the baby cooking as long as you can!

  • Sometimes there is no explantion as to why it happens.  Since you are only 34 weeks and the meds are stopping labor I would continue with it (even if labor is coming back-they are still able to stop it) It keeps the baby in a little longer to get grow a little more even a day can make a difference.  There will prob come a time were the meds wont work and you will deliver.  So my advice keep the baby in as long as possible unless baby is showing signs of stress.
  • I would trust my doctors and keep baby in as long as possible.

  • I would do everything I could to keep the baby in me as long as I can (well, until full term).  That might be just me though.  I'm sure your baby would do fine if born now (as they say) but having two friends who have had premature babies in the NICU for several months, the longer inside you, the more developed their lungs will be is my philosophy.  Good luck with whatever decision you make!

  • I want to add that every day that the baby stays in gives the baby a lesser chance of complications and being in the NICU.
  • I agree with the other ladies, keep the baby inside a little longer. I'm sure it's frustrating and you don't want to be stuck at the hospital, but it will pay off in the end.

    Good Luck!

  • I agree, even though it sucks for you, I would try everything possible to keep the baby in you as long as possible!  Hang in there!  I know it is hard (I have been on bedrest since 27 weeks) but in the grand scheme of things, these weeks of struggling will be insignificant to us but to our babies could really help them have a better start!
  • Are you on terbutaline? I had to take 2 of those a day when I went into preterm labor at 31 weeks and was on strict bed rest...it sounds like you may have it a little worse. I say keep baby in there as long as possible but if baby's lungs are ready(that's what they say develops last) then I would let it happen. You are almost 35 weeks and that's pretty good right there. If your body is ready, then let it do it's thing!

  • I'm not sure that's really your decision to make unfortunately.  I went into preterm labor at 23 weeks then again at 26 and am on strict bedrest with procardia every 6 hours.  I wonder why you're not on procardia or one of the other anti-contraction meds?  Are you allergic or is your body reacting badly to the medication?

I would LOVE to be able to make it to 34 weeks ... by my perinatologist said even that is not out of the woods as far as the baby spending time in the NICU.  Try to keep your baby in as long as possible.  I know it's frustrating, but it really is best to sit tight and try to keep him/her in as long as you can.

  • Follow doctor's orders and keep that baby inside as LONG AS POSSIBLE.  If your baby was full term, I'd say go right ahead and let yourself go into labor, but being 34 weeks, there's still a good chance your baby will spend time in the NICU.  And let me tell ya that having a baby in the NICU, even for a few days, SUCKS a whole lot.  After 34+ weeks of pg, all you want to do is hold your baby constantly and keep him/her w/ you all the time, and you CAN'T there.

Also, if you tell doctors you don't want it, it's very likely that you'd be going AMA (against medical advice), and it's possible that your insurance might deny payment for any bills incurred because of that.  Which means, you could potentially be stuck with a NICU bill... and those, my friend, are CRAAAAZY...

Hope things improve and your PTL just magically goes away!!
