pacifier

hey girls!  just wondering. my LO is 2 months old.  when we first came home from the hospital we would give him his paci when we put him down to nap.  a few days after we got home i watched an episode of The Doctors (that "talk show" with the 4 doctors) and they were going over SIDS.  they were showing an example of a dangerous crib set up and a safe one.  of course the dangerous one had all of the classic items: bumpers, blankets, stuffed animals, etc.  the safe one had nothing in it, but the baby and a breathable bumper.  that is all we have in our crib, too.  but, they made a point of saying that you shouldn't let your baby fall asleep with a pacifier.  ever since then i always take it out of his mouth before laying him down, even though i think it would soothe him much better to have it.

what do ya'll do?

  • they actually didn't say.  the were working with a mom-to-be and while they were going over the examples of each crib the mom-to-be asked about the baby sleeping with a pacifier and the doctor that was handling the segment told her it was very important to not have the baby sleep with the paci, but never explained why.

  • we let her fall asleep with it although it usually falls out when she falls to sleep bc she sleeps with her mouth open
  • hmmm...i just checked thei website & they have a list of dos & don't but don't talk about Paci's.....they did say no bottled because peices of hte nipple coudl break off and cause choking.

L sleeps with his, he spits it out once he is asleep sometimes. I have read research that it is rec. because it keeps them from sleeping to deeply & keeps them breathing, I know the LLL and other BFing groups fought that because they think it interferes with BFing....I say do what you are comfortable with.

  • We use a paci during the day, if he is fussy but not as a mean to make him fall asleep so he actually never has a paci when he's in the crib. I just didn't want him to depend on the paci to fall asleep.

  • maybe they say no bottles for the same reason as no paci...the nipple part could break off.  who knows?  i was just as perplexed when i heard it myself, but whatever the reason, it made me paranoid.  :-)
  • DD's pedi recommended a paci for sleep becuz it helps reduce the risk of SIDS...so, every dr has different opinions on this, obviously.

I don't like that DD is dependent on a paci to soothe herself to sleep but I notice that she is naturally using it less now that she is older, without me really trying to wean her from it.  She's more interested in putting her fingers and hands in her mouth.

  • She usually spits it out when she falls into a deeper sleep.
