My doctor didn't even mention kick counts until my 37w appointment in response to my question if lessened movement was OK at this point. He just said I should be getting 5-6 movements (not necessarily kicks) within an hour after eating.
Before this point, I felt enough movement that I was never concerned. My son had his active days and his quiet days but that was normal.
My midwife just told me that I should feel 10 movements in one hour, and to count that any time of the day. She didn't tell me to keep a log. LO moves so often that I usually feel 10 in 10 minutes...
I don't do them I just pay attention to the little guy/girl and make sure that he/she is moving during the day at different times. I think they are mostly for if you think that you haven't felt the baby that you should get 10 movements in 1 hour.
I should mention that I haven't done them because my Dr. hasn't ever said anything about them. I've only ever just read about them...
I never had them, I just usually kept in mind the last time LO moved, and moved on with life. If I haven't felt her in a while I'll sit still with my legs up and see if she moves, which she usually does. (she doesn't usually move around a lot when I'm up and around.)
My baby move so much there's no reason for me to count kicks. If she's having a quiet day then I will drink/eat something and lay down to count but I don't log it.
I never kept a log (or kept count for that matter). If it's something your dr. recommends for you or your nervous about it then by all means, but as long as you feel LO moving throughout the day there's no need to be overly concerned about movement. And like PP's mentioned, should you think you have NOT felt her move in some time, have something sweet to drink and sit down and see if you feel her. I never seem to notice her when I'm standing/running around, only when I sit/lay down.
My doctor just said I should feel at least 8 in an hour in a day. So if I get worried cuz I don't feel the baby too much in a day I wait and count, otherwise I don't even think about it much.
My doctor told me the only time I really need to count kicks is if I noticed that I haven't been feeling them very often, and then I need to feel 10 in an hour period.
My OB gave me a count kick log to do everyday. I got it at 31w? I have had an extremely easy pregnancy and LO is extremely active, so I'm assuming it just depends on your OB.
Mine never mentioned kick counts, just read about them and heard about them on here. But If I do notice LO not moving I stop and try to get 10 mvmts, but I dont log it.
