Possibly moving to Twin Cities

DH has been offered a job in Minneapolis and we are considering the invitation but we would like to do some research first.  Fortunately, we have the opportunity to visit first.

We are currently living and working in London and lived in New York for about 10 years before that.  Ideally, I'd like to move somewhere with great schools and an excellent neighborhood.  I would rather have the smallest house in a great location than live in a mansion in the middle of nowhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions for neighborhoods/areas that we should visit while we are there?

  • I am assuming that he'll be working in Downtown MPLS, and really there are a lot of places around there, it really just depends on how far you want to drive to get to work.  I know that a lot of people on here are from the western burbs, but I would totally recommend St. Paul and it's neighborhoods, but that's because I was born and raised in Highland Park and that is a gorgeous neighborhood with great schools.

  • Yes, downtown Minneapolis and I don't think he wants to travel more than about 45 minutes for work.  I think we'd like to look at city neighborhoods and then also the 'burbs' as you say.

  • I would recommend the S. Minneapolis, Edina, Linden Hills, Lake of the Isles, Lake Harriet neighborhoods. Very nice communites with good schools and probably only a 20 minute commute to dtwn Minneapolis. Good luck in your search!

  • How fun!

I have helped a few transplants relocate to the Twin Cities, and would be more than happy to do the same for you. I almost have to... seeing as MY daughter is named Ava as well... hahaha.

Let's email, it's easier. We can talk about what your "style" is, budget, what you're looking to get vs what you don't want.. etc.

There are some KILLER deals right now, esp in some nice upper bracket homes, and I even have a great realtor that I could recommend, should you need one. (goodness knows there's a 1000 of those looking for gigs, lol)

I can be reached at david_And_tracie @ ya  hoooo  just give me some basics and we can go from there !

Once you are in town, I would be willing to show you around town and spend some time orientating you to the area. I LOVE Minnesota, it is such a hidden secret ! If you feel comfortable, I'm sure I can even watch your gal for a while, too. We can talk.  ;-)

  • Plymouth was voted the "Best City in the Nation" by some magazine last year. It's about 20-30 min away from Downtown with traffic (depending on where in Plymouth, of course). Maple Grove is also nice as well as Eagan, Burnsville, Chaska, Shakopee, or Richfield (kind of close to airport).

If you want more of a diverse area, I'd be happy to talk to you about North Minneapolis. They have some cute, older houses (older as in has charm!) and there are pockets that are safer than others. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the high schools (though they're not so bad), but there are lots of private schools if you wanted to go that route. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to chat more! Minneapolis offers TONS of great access to parks, recreation, and more! And we're about 10 min from Downtown Mpls.

How exciting! Minnesota is a great state! :)

  • I second Linden Hills, and also give high marks to Saint Anthony Park neighborhood is St Paul.  The East Campus of the U of M is located in that neighborhood and it's full of old mansions, U of M professors, quaint little shops, an excellent elementary and junior high school and lots of kids!!!  Langford Park has a 4th of July celebration that looks like it's right out of a movie set.  It's wonderful and I live on the E border of the neighborhood.
  • Edina, SW Minneapolis, Eden Prairie, Wayzata, Minnetonka, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Hopkins, St. Louis Park

You will have plenty of options!!!

  • We live in Minnetonka and absolutely love it.  It's about 8 miles west of Mpls and much of the city is within the Hopkins school district, which is one of the best in the state.  Some houses in Minnetonka can be pricey (i.e. by the lakes), but areas closer to Hopkins are much more reasonable (like ours).  Also, Hopkins has a super-cute Main Street area that gives it a bit of a "small town" feel.

I lived in Minneapolis during college and absolutely loved it.  However, now that we have DD, I'm very glad to be in the "burbs."  PM me if I can answer any questions about the area!

  • how exciting!  there are lots of great suburbs of minneapolis that will allow for a 45 minute or less commute.   edina, minnetonka, wayzata, st. louis park, etc.  neighborhoods in minneapolis that are fabulous are: linden hills; some parts of southwest minneapolis; and i, personally, love northeast (different from north) but am not sure on the schools.  it's really fast to get to downtown mpls via car, bike or bus (from most areas if NE Mpls).

Personally, I grew up in the eastern suburbs and live there now.  I work in Minneapolis and drive about 45 minutes during normal rush hour.    Woodbury is nice & would be at the top of the commute comfort level, I think.  In general, you will get much more house for your money in Woodbury.  But, I know you said you are ok with a smaller, urban home and closer commute - so Highland Park in St Paul or Mac-Groveland are really wonderful neighborhoods with nice schools.

you can do some school research on https://education.state.mn.us/mde/index.html

legally, in mn, realtors aren't allowed to share with you areas/neighborhoods to avoid.  i think that is important to know before looking for homes.  it's best to get some candid advice from a non-realtor on which areas to avoid.  in general, you can trust your gut, when you are driving around and seeing homes.  also, once you are looking, you will realize that similar homes in different areas may be significantly different in cost (in most cases, related to location).

    Good luck!

  • Woodbury!

Upscale neighboorhood, new retail, and hilly terrain (that you won't find on the west side of town). Woodbury is the nicest town near the 3M Global HQ so there are a lot of smart people around here... which makes for good schools.

It's a suburb, though, so you may not be intersted in this if you've lived in the city for so long.
