what baby item cost you the most?

just wondering what item you have spent the most on for baby and how much it cost you. just for fun. i always wanted a beautiful crib- it was so important to me. but now that i'm pregnant i have found out all the other things baby needs and don't think i can afford an expensive crib. i'm talking under 200$. i don't get maternity leave so we have to come up with 3 months of my income plus all the money to pay medical bills. i also thought an expensive baby carrier and glider would be so important to me but instead i'm looking at using my parents wooden rocker and just getting a functional baby carrier. aw, how it sucks when you come down to reality!

  • I think our breast pump is going to end up costing the most.  You can get other things at a lower price, just make sure you're not sacrificing safety for price.  My mom bought us our travel system and it was $100 less because it was a discontinued pattern, but it was still safe.

  • we spent the most on nursery furniture. We bought a dresser with a changing top that we can unscrew and remove later. And the crib converts into a toddler bed and then into a full size bed.

We had wanted to do a more expensive stroller but when it came down to it we decided the furniture was more important since we wanted high quality furniture that will last until LO goes to college.

  • his furniture (crib and dresser/changing table) was $800
  • The crib we want will cost as the much.  It's $429.

  • DH just finished building a closet in the nursery for about $450...does that count???  ;-)

The dresser/changer ($399) is the priciest item we're getting ourselves but, LO will use it until they are in college. My parents have generously offered to buy the matching crib ($349).

We've been lucky to get great hand-me downs: glider, moses basket, baby carrier. The glider may not be exactly what I would have picked out for myself but, it is a big savings and is in great shape. MIL will re-do the upholstery for us to match the nursery.

  • Her crib (this is for DD)...it was $300. We will buy the same crib for DS as well. Even the double stroller I bought was only 1/2 that price.
  • we have to double up on everything so that makes it pricey,  yesterday we actually picked out the car seats I want which will be about 350-400 together and the pack n' play that i want which is a twin one for 200ish,  we're not buying anything yet, I don't want to jinx anything.
  • His nursery furniture cost us a boat load.  Crib, dresser/changing table, rocker and armoire were over $6,000.

Holy @#$! That is a lot of moola for nursery furniture.

Our most expensive item will most likely be the $300 breast pump, followed closely by the organic mattress/bedding. Thankfully the crib that I want is only $200.

holy ***! whatever you do for a living let me know cuz i'm changing carreer fields! e-gads! i got lucky with the breast pump. i found out insurance will cover 80%. i was freaking out until a friend told me to check with my insurance and that eased my mind a ton.

  • It would be the furniture.  We have Munire (Urban) for my DD, and bought a lot of pieces  The crib, nightstand, dresser and hutch.  We also bought a bookcase from Land of Nod, and we have a fully upholstered Dutailier glider and ottoman.

So her room probably cost us about $3400.  That does not inlude accessories...if I include drapes and lamps, etc. it would be about another $600 or so.

But her room is really cute and we plan on using the furniture for this baby and future babies (we want one more).

  • California Closet style closet storage system - just under $600 (installed)

    Glider $400

    Dress - $200ish

    Crib - $200ish

    Car Seat - $150 (+ $50 for extra base for DH's car)

  • There are a lot of items we're getting in the $200-600 range (crib/glider/changing table/stroller/convertible car seat/rug/bedding/etc.)

It all adds up, doesn't it??

  • We were given lots of things to use from my sister, including the crib.  So we are off the hook on lots of costs.

That being said, the most expensive single item will be a toss-up between the stroller (baby jogger or bob), the breast pump (medela pump-in-style advanced) or the organic crib mattress (naturepedic).  All around the $300 mark.

That will be our main money outlay, since we have good health insurance coverage.  My maternity leave will be unpaid, though.

  • We are getting new windows upstairs, so that will be our biggest expense. My mom is buying the crib, so everything else will be up to us and it all adds up quickly. I get more nervous about that than my DH does.

  • Here are the main things we've bought so far. I've been scouring Craigslist and consignment shops and have gotten some great deals (everything is in really good shape). To answer your original question...we've spent the most on the dresser/changing table. We just bought it last week and LOVE it. It is in perfect shape and matches the crib/glider wonderfully. I'd been thinking I wouldn't find anything close, so we were thrilled to find it.

  • My mom bought our monitor and breast pump, MIL bought our crib and someone (not sure who) bought our glider. The next most expensive items on our registry is our two dressers that are in the $500 range (each). We'll be buying those if n.o one else does - those will be our most expensive purchases.
