Secondary IF

Havent made up my mind- but leaning towards IUI

I havent descided 100% but I really dont see why I would need to do IVF without TRYING IUI.

Here are the random thoughts going through my head so bare with me.

IVF would still cost us 1-2K out of pocket, money we have but its definately not "extra" we are investing in my business and paying down debt.

IVF would eat up all of my IF coverage, so what if it didnt work? we would be screwed.

If IVF did work and I had a alot of embies left, I would have to freeze them so then I need to add on those costs.

Other things to think about

I could do 3 IUI with Injectables per my 1 IVF

what if I overstimulated with my IUI, should I convert it to IVF or be out that cycle, this worries me since I do ovulate on my own and have been producing 2 eggs on femera.

what if all 3 IUI's didnt work and I would of wished I could of gone on to IVF but now am screwed with no coverage.

Alot to think about....

Another thing to take into consideration we dont know DH SA, hes never had one or been asked. We can only assume its good because we have Ashlyn.

We dont see any reason to have him do one before we make our descision since it would eat up coverage but That could factor in...

I think I should do 1 IUI with injects and then re-evaluate. Worse case scenerio we descided to do IVF and I have to pay more OOP

  • It looks like you are coming a long way on your thought processes, thats awesome. I think I would try inject/IUI to see how you respond to the meds, etc. Goodluck with whichever you choose to do.

  • I would definitely do an SA before proceeding.  They are fairly cheap and i know a lot of people who already have a child and come to find out they have MFI.
  • The SA is critical! You could have conceived on your own with bad sperm, and your chances would just be low now. IUI worked for us, but I would really talk about this all with you Dr. to see what s/he thinks. Why do the suggest IVF right away rather than what you just talked about with the IUIs? That would seem to make more sense.
  • I agree with PP...the SA is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO important (and yes, I'm shouting it from the mountain tops!). Of course you have your girl but not having that piece of the puzzle and that would not come off of your coverage because it is not from your body. His insurance would have to cover it or you'd have to OOP it but I would NOT proceed with anything until I had that, had the results analyzed and know if there's anything there to be concerned with.

Also, I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty positive you can't "convert" an IUI cycle to an IVF cycle. I hope someone weighs in on this who knows because I'd hate for you to think this was a possibility if it isn't.

It absolutely IS possible (and happens often) to convert an IUI cycle in to an IVF cycle. If you and your Dr. are up for it. It would depend on how you responded to the meds. If you really overproduce, they can go for a retrieval and transfer.

I would get all of the facts from your Dr. but I think you are on a good track!

  • If things go as they have the past several months, I'll be doing my first IUI on Tuesday......sometime this week anyway.

  • I think you are making a wise choice if your DH's SA comes out normal but as eyenerd said I think that is a must.  Why waste the money if the little guys don't swim.

  • Like PP's all said the SA is soooo important.  Not to place blame, but it could be your DH's boys that are the problem.  I'd definitely find that out before you proceed.  I think you are on the right track with doing an IUI before IVF.

Also, if your DH does have a sperm issue, I highly recommend for him to take Proxeed.  It has helped us immensely.  After DH takes it for 90 days, his count and motility go way up.
