I know that it is all right. I know this. He can roll over from back to front, and from front to back. In fact, he does so over and over and over again, during the waking hours, just to prove he can.

So then, why does it bother me so much that he is sleeping on his tummy. I need to stop checking on him. I need to let him be. I do let him sleep that way. I don't flip him over. But it still worries me. I guess I just need extra reassurance. I am stuck on a number, and arbitrary number and that number is 6. Back to sleep for at least the first six months. He's only five. I always put him down on his back, but he doesn't stay there. Tell me he's fine. Cyber smack some sense into me. Make me stop worrying. I am a worry wart! TIA!

Hmmm. Can you make it okay with yourself by thinking about in how many ways he's already 6 months? Where is he size-wise? Developmentally? If he's ahead of the game, maybe he's ahead of the danger as well. I have no idea if that's true, just trying to find a way to make yourself feel better.?

He's not swaddled and has no blankets right? ANd no big puffy bumpers or anything?

As long as he's in a safe sleeping environment, "they" say that if they flip themselves, it's all OK.

I always heard the SIDS risk drops dramatically after 4 months.

I started putting Ben down on his tummy around 6.5 months and he didnt' roll yet. My kid was a freak late roller. I still maintain he *could* roll but didnt' feel like it. ANyway, I used to go check on him a zillion times. It's always something out there to worry about. But I'm sure he's fine.

Developmentally, pedi said he was closer to 6+ mos, at 4 months.

Physically, he's as big, or bigger than kids twice his age. And he is not a good sleeper. AT.ALL So maybe this will give us all some much needed sleep!

I'm sure you're fine - because he is pretty physically advanced for his age.

But if you really need the peace of mind you could get one of those monitors that senses the motion of the mattress so you'd know immediately if he stopped breathing.

Me thinks I wrote this exact post around that age.

Isabelle started sleeping on her tummy around 5-ish months as well. I freaked about it for a long time, but as long as baby can roll from front to back he/she will be fine. Try not to worry, but I totally get it. I'm also a big checker.

Here's my new worry: Isabelle started sleeping w a blankie 3 days ago. ::running to go check on her::

Hi Katie! I used to get calls like this from parents a lot when I was with the SIDS Foundation of WA. And I always told them, if baby was rolling on his own (key point) you do not need to flip him all night long, as long as he is in a safe sleep environment, like pp said...if he's on his tummy on a pillow, then I worry, but I don't think that's happening here.

Wow, that was quite a run-on sentence. Anyway, I know it is scary but you are doing the right thing. And that's coming from someone who is pretty strict about following all the safe sleep guidelines, given what I saw.

Was Max overdue? If so you get to cont those days to towards his 6.5 months. And, your son is just advanced! Think of it as you have a 6.5 month old trapped in a 5 month old body. Hopefully after you all get some consistent sleep you will worry less about him.

BUT even at a year, I would walk in to DS's room and check on him to make sure he was still beathing when he's on his tummy. THen I'd stare at him for a bit because he was so cute with his little butt up in the air. I miss that!

I think I wrote a similar post too. It's scary at first but you get used to it, day by day. I hope he starts sleeping for looong stretches for you and I hope you can sleep for long stretches too!

Max actually arrived on his EDD. So nope, not over due. I have a feeling I will be exactly like you. Always checking on him. Even when he's 18 Stick out tongue !
