Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How often do you nurse your 9-10 month old- confused

We just got back from the Pedi and she said I was nursing too often. She said at this age she should nurse (or bottle feed) 4x per day and the rest be solids. My LO started solids late - she refused them until close to 8 mos. and still wants purees only. This is her schedule:

7 am nurses

8 am cereal

9:30 3 oz bottle

11:30 jar of solids

12 I come home for lunch and she nurses

3 pm 3 oz bottle

6 pm nurses

7 pm we all eat dinner, she gets jar of baby food and oatmeal

8 nurses

She said I need to cut out the 12 feeding and the 6 pm. Does that sound right? It seems like a long time to go without drinking anything except water. Thanks for your help!

Re: How often do you nurse your 9-10 month old- confused

  • whattt?   most calories/nutrition come from nursing until a year old, so why she is telling you to cut out feedings is beyond me.  Unless you plan on weaning now, do what your baby is requiring.   i would also find a new pedi ew

  • See I totally disagree. Solids are only supposed to make up 25% of a baby's diet until they reach 12 months. At the times you have listed "bottle" does that mean formula or is it pumped breast milk? And do you BF during the night at all?

  • DS gets 4 bottles a day (bfed until 8 months, getting milk 5-6 times a day). But the bottles are much larger than what your DD gets. 6 oz at a time... I think she'll taper off when she's ready and there is absolutely nothing wrong with your schedule. I had a pedi tell me that I didn't want to BF too much because I would get sick of it etc. If you're both happy ... perfect!
  • I totally disagree with your pedi's recommendation. I BF every 4 hours.  Solids are only supposed to provide ADDITIONAL nutrition until at least 12 months.
  • It is pumped BM. I don't BF at night, well sometimes I do at 4:30 am for a short time.

ughh even more reason to NOT stop bf'ing during the day.  your pedi is nuts.

  • I see absolutely nothing wrong with your schedule and think your pedi is whack. Ounce for ounce, nothing has more nutrition for a baby in the first 12 months of life than BM. There's absolutely nothing wrong with her getting the majority of her calories from the perfect food made exactly for her. Sometimes I shake my head at the old-school pedis. ?I EP, but DD has 5 6 oz bottles throughout the day and 1 overnight. We just started solids 6 days ago but she hates them and pretty much eats none of them.?
  • I agree that I would be hesitant to listen to your pedi on this one. DD is 8 mo and I still nurse her every 3 hours or so during the day. She usually gets up 1x at night to eat.
  • I bf DS 6-7 times in a 24 hour period.  We have his 9 mo appointment next week - I wonder what our pedi will say.

  • I still nurse on demand (on top of solids) and DD nurses at least 6 times a day, most days it's more like 8 or 9 times. She likes to eat lol.
  • Thank you! I was pretty upset that I was feeding her "wrong". She also made the comment that I shouldn't nurse her when it was "convenient for me" (meaning during my lunch break) which made me feel like an idiot....I feel better now.
  • I'd ignore your pedi; sounds like she isn't really clued in to how breastfeeding should work.  I'm of the opinion that babies should always be nursed on demand.  Kiddo really has not decreased the number of times he nurses yet - and he nurses more than your LO.  BM should still be her primary source of calories.  Definitely ignore your pedi.
  • My DS is not even 6 months old (but he's 20lbs and as big as a normal 8mo old) and he BFs (or gets 5-6oz bm bottles) between 5-6 times in 24 hrs. He eats at 4am, 8:30am, 12:30pm, 4:30pm (sometimes 3:30 and 6 instead of just 4:30), and 8:30pm.

I think he eats more at a time and less often than your LO, but I think you should do what makes your LO happy. If she is happy and content on that schedule then stick with it and screw your pedi.

  • That schedule doesn't sound too unrealistic to me.  If I was going to cut something out, it would probably be one of the 3 oz bottles.

Emma's schedule of bottles is roughly the following:

    9:00am    7oz bottle

    (solid breakfast)

    12:00pm  7 oz bottle

    (solid lunch)

    3:00pm   5 oz bottle

    5:30       7oz bottle

    (solid dinner)

    8:00       7 oz bottle

  • Your pediatrician sounds crazy to me. I think a lot of people base their rec's on some crazy ideas.......

     Here is what DS does

    7am nurse

9am breakfast (applesauce or other fruit)

10or11am 5 oz bottle of pumped milk

     12ish lunch- table food, ect

    1or2pm 5 oz bottle

    4or5pm 5 oz bottle.

    6pm dinner-table food/jar food

8pm nurse and go to bed

he usually nurses some at night as well.

I'm trying to figure out if we can spread out the daycare bottles b/c sometimes he ends up not taking his second bottle till around 2 pm, and I think he would be fine waiting till I get home at 6pm to nurse or do solids , but i just can't  figure it out and I don't want him to be hungry.
