Pregnant after 35

Civilian Hospital/Doctor Vs. Balboa Naval

hi this is my first child and I am a Navy Wife.  I was just wondering if anyone has delivered both at Balboa Naval and a local San Diego Hospital. With the way the TriCare Prime is here in San Diego (I guess due to military overpopulation) I have the option of staying with my civilian doctor, and it is all covered (or so they say) or I can go to Balboa Naval. I chose an OB who was a referral from a friend who is also over 35 and the doctor kinda specializes with "older" mothers

I was so sure that is what I wanted to do, but for some reason now I am having some doubts. Do any of you have any experience with both military and civilian births?

Re: Civilian Hospital/Doctor Vs. Balboa Naval

  • I am an Army wife and only have experience with a military hospital for birth (which went totally fine BTW) and am currently going through my 2nd pg at a different Army base.  Personally, I loved my civilian OB but wasn't able to use him for my 1st pg (and not in the same state for this pg).  If you like your OB and everything is still covered 100% I probably wouldn't change the doc.  I would XP your OP over on the Military Newlywed board as well.

  • sweet. I didn't know there was a military board on here.  thank you for sharing
  • Sorry,  I'm not much help for "real" information, but I have tons of Navy friends in the SD area.  Unfortunately, most of them are older and haven't had kids in quite a while.

My OB, who is awesome, is a former Navy officer who was stationed at LaMoore and served on USS Stennis right before coming out here last year.  She's really, really good, IMO.

  • I'd also post on the San Diego boards.  If you like your OB, I probably wouldn't change.  I've heard good things about Balboa but UCSD, Sharp, etc also have good reps!

    Good luck with your choice.
