Do you think being a SAHM is getting more popular?

I am surprised how many of my FB friends from HS are SAHMs.  All of my friends from college work full time out of the home.

What do you think?  Is it getting more common?  What % of mom's do you think SAH?

  • it's my dream to be a SAHM....I hope it comes true soon than later.

  • I think I saw a statistic somewhere that 60% of women are in the work force.  I was surprised that the number wasn't higher.
  • I only have a few friends that are actually moms, and that percentage is mostly true.  If they are not FT SAHM's, then they work a PT job.

  • Getting more common than when? Because until fairly recently in history, most women with kids *were* SAHMs. It's the concept of working mom that is the newer "phenomenon".

I have lots of friends (women, and couples) with kids. I'd say that right now, more of my friends work than SAH. But, if I include those who work PT and the husbands who are SAHDs, then it's a fairly even split. Almost all of my friends (and their husbands) went to college, if that makes a difference.

  • Right, obviously it isn't more popular than when we were kids.  I guess I am thinking like the past 10 years?

I just wondered what trends people thought there were.

Oh and no, I didn't mean to imply anything about college attendance.  I am pretty sure all of my HS friends also went to college.  I am new to FB and therefore catching up with HS friends, so I am just finding out that so many SAH, whereas my college friends I have stayed in touch with and new that they were WOHM.

  • Most of my friends work. I don't know any SAHD's. I am in a MOMS club though and the majority of us SAH, some just join to participate if they work part-time or are teachers so they can hang in the summer.

I am so thankful for the MC, because so many other friends were working.

I taught in Catholic school, so for  me it wouldn't have made sense to work since all of my paycheck would have gone to daycare. I wanted to SAH anyway.

  • I don't know about more popular, but a lot of my friends from grad school stay home.  I think the number is relatively similar the last 10 or 15 years.  Around 60% of moms of children under 3 stay home most of the time.  The number is skewed sometimes because some studies count women who work at all, like even for a special event or for extra money at Christmas as "workers", not SAHM.
  • All of my friends with kids work full-time.  My 2 SIL's work full-time. My sister is the only other SAHM out of my circle of friends!
  • No...I think there are more stay at home moms because they are loosing their jobs.  There are not that many jobs in my state that allows a woman (or man) to work at home.  I know in the medical field it is not allowed and my DD could not do so either (company secrets might escape!).
