Ok, so in November of last year I was admitted to the hospital by my OB because of extreme hyperemesis. That hospital bill ended up being around $1100 after insurance.
I switched OB's in the middle of my pregnancy and so when I had to go to the hospital again several times, I went to a different hospital that my OB's are affiliated with. Well, I had to go 5 different times including my delivery. The total of all of those bills were about $1300 for me, and $1100 for my daughters stay.
For my first hospital visit, I offered to pay them the total amount if they would negotiate the cost with me. I was able to get them to settle for $900. The other hospital where I delivered at, I offered them the same thing to pay all my bills right then if they would be able to negotiate or give me some kind of discount. They refused. I tried everything, even a sob story, and nothing worked. You would think the hospital would do what they needed to to get paid on all their bills since I'm sure there are a lot of people right now that can't afford to pay their medical bills. She kept telling me "you are an insured patient so there is nothing we can do".
Do you know why that might be, why one hospital would negotiate and the other wouldn't? I know there has to be some way to get them to negotiate with me, has anyone else had any luck with this?
Re: Hospital Bills- I have a question.
often times if you are insured, they feel as though they already gave you a discount - though the insurance discount.
maybe call and try to talk to someone else in the billing department?
DD was born at Banner Gateway which is in Gilbert and they do not negotiate at all.
Now if you were uninsured your bill would have gone down to something like 25%. I tried to negotiate for paying in full and they weren't having it.
Were both hospitals Banner?
DD was born at Banner Gateway too! This is the one that will not negotiate. I went to Chandler Regional the first time, they were the ones that did negotiate. It's so frustrating. You would think if you offer to pay the full amount they would do something for you.
I thought so too, but nothin!
We must live close then cause I live less than a mile from there. I loved that hospital!
Our hospital gave us a 15% discount for 'pre paying' as soon as we left. They weren't forthcoming with this information though and we had to get the name of a specific person in the billing department from someone who came through our room to chat - I don't remember what her title was.
So definitely try this!
