Bribes - I am in a bad cycle

I knew this was a bad idea from day 1 but on the first day of preschool I told DS that I would have a surprise for him when he got home...I think I gave him a snack.  Well, we are on day 7 and he expects a toy or special snack every day!  He is starting to ask me what I will have for him when he gets home.  Ugh, today was the first day that he was upset at home but actually EXCITED when he got to school and went in with his teacher and a smile on his face so I cannot stop yet but man this was not a smart idea!

  • Sounds like he is enjoying preschool now so that is good!  I am sure he'll get over not having a surprise in a few days.

  • Just make it something that you would have given him anyway.

For example, I told Joey when I dropped him off today that if I got a good report when I picked him up, we would go to the playground.  I was going to bring him anyway --- so no sweat off my back.  :)

Snacks --- those are easy.  I usually give the kids a snack after school anyway so just play it up like it's a big special treat when really, you would have given it to him anyway.

Don't make it something that you can't withhold though -- in case he doesn't do good!  :)

  • We do a big glass of chocolate milk when they get home. Whatever works for you!

I try not to buy little gifts. I save the gifts for a like a few days of good behavior.

  • J usually has a snack when he comes home from dayhome.  I think that it's fine to do that as a "reward." I would maybe stop calling it a reward and just let it become part of the routine.
