Trying to Get Pregnant

s/o obgyn ... do you prefer a he or a she?

and why?

Mine is a she. I have always had a female doc. I know once all of this baby stuff gets rolling I will have to suck it up and see a male if push comes to shove. But for some reason I just feel more comfortable with a woman.

  • I prefer a she, but I can't find one who doesn't have a 6 month waiting list of new patients around here. Oy.

  • I don't mind either way, however I feel more uncomfortable with a man down there than a woman.  But I have to remind myself they've seen worse.
  • Well, I have always preferred a male.  I have had a female doc twice and both experiences were horrible.  #1 I have found the male doctors to know their stuff more #2 they have been a lot more gentle and #3 believe it or not they have been way more personable and compassionate.

I know these are just my experiences so this is just what I prefer.  I just recently left my female doc to go back to a male and i absolutely LOVE him.

  • In general, I preferred male doctors.  This will sound weird, but many female doctors give off the attitude that I should "woman up" and just take it, no matter what my concerns are.  That being said, I did find a wonderful female general doctor that also does paps.  She is the most caring and understand doctor ever.  The complete opposite of our RE. haha
  • I always had a male as I felt "wrong" having a woman touching my privates (this was my young mind) and then it just became habit.  But last year on my girlie weekend my friend said that she always saw a female as they knew what you were going through...and it made sense.  So I have been seeing a female ever since (we were talking as I was saying I had to find one on my new insurance :).

  • I've had both.. really didnt feel uncomfortable with the male. he was a great doctor and had beautiful blue eyes.. and my current ob/gyn is a woman and she is great too! I guess as long as its not a great big gross hairy sweaty, smelly person.. i'd be ok... Embarrassed

  • I prefer a woman.  I did see a male gyn for a short while, when his wife quit the practice, but I am more comfortable with a woman.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I always had a man up until last year, and I was completely fine with that.  My old doctor left the practice so I started seeing a woman.  Now I'm really happy that I see a female obgyn.  It just seems like she understands what I'm experiencing and can sympathize. When all this trouble TTC started, she would give me a hug every time I saw her.

  • I agree - I prefer a female doc. I have one now and love her.

Like JME, when I do get pregnant I am going to have to get cycled through the docs in the practice in case one of them is on call when I go into labor.

  • I have had both and I like the female better. Why do I like the female better you ask? Because she doesn't use 10 pounds of lube. Plus, she's really nice and I like that she actually has a vaj to answer questions if I have any.

  • I've had the same one since I started going and it's a she.  I love her.  I feel very comfortable, and I think part of that is gender related.

My mom goes to the same practice, but had to go to a different Dr. in that practice, and he looks like Matthew McConaughey.

I don't think I would be comfortable with that.  A male Dr. and a HOT Dr. are 2 different things!

  • I've had both.  I found my female doctor was insensitive and not gentle.  I felt more like a car than a person.  My male doctor is the sweetest older man.  He spent 5 minutes talking about the necklace I had on that DH got me for valentine's day.  He's more detail oriented and makes a point to make you feel comfortable (as possible in that situation).
  • I prefer a she however the male OB/GYN that my SIL used for both her boys came highly recomended. So now I go to him. And he's also two blocks from my house so I can walk there. Score!

  • I don't really care either way.  I am not a shy person, though.  I do agree with some of the other posters that male OB/GYNs seem more personable and gentle.

  • I have a he and have only had a she 1 time. It really does not matter to me if it is a he or she as long as they make me feel comfortable.

Is it wrong that I wish my OB looked like Matthew McConaughey?  Yum.

  • i prefer a male but i had to switch from my old doctor because he wasn't really listening to me so now i have a female and she's great. i guess i don't care either way but if i had to choose one it would be a male.

  • My Dr. is a  woman and she's great! As for when I get and obgyn, I would prefer a woman but it's not really a big deal for me so I'm not going to be concerned if it's a man.

  • I like a "she", but there are lots of good "he" docs

I want someone with my parts. (haha)

  • I'm with and always have had a male Dr. The first time I went I was kinda weirded out by having a male, but he was great and then sadly left the practice! Figures. Anyway my new Dr. is also a male and he's just as good. Very thorough, gentle, and nice, and spends some extra time when I have questions.

    I don't think I'd want a female doc, but I guess if I had to it'd be o.k.
