Do you live in Portland?

For some reason I think it would be my dream city to live in when we settle down to our forever home.  Do you live there and love it?

Re: Do you live in Portland?

  • I live in Hillsboro which is a suburb of Portland.  I love the Portland area and don't think I would ever be able to move away.  It is such an amazing city!

  • I live in Portland.  I was born and raised here, and have loved it for my entire life.  I lived in Florida when I was 20 and quickly moved back to Portland.  Portland and the whole state of Oregon (and Washingotn too really) are so pretty and so varied.  My house is 1 hour from great skiing, 2 hours to surfing at the beach, and 2 hours to windsurfing.  3 hours to the desert.  It's like the best of everything.

Have you visited here?  We get a lot of rain and it's an ugly grey sky from October straight through March, our winters are very gloomy and difficult for those that aren't from here originally.

I haven't visited yet.  I keep telling DH we should go for a vacation there and check it out.  Does it snow in the winter?  Or is it just gray and gloomy?   I hear that Portland is very eco-conscious and great for families.

  • I too live in a suburb of Portland (Beaverton, on the Hillsboro border) .. and have lived in or around Portland for 22 years now.. I could never live anywhere else.  It really is the perfect place.. It has a small town feel while still being a bigger city, the weather is good, we don't have a lot of crime, we don't have extreme weather or natural disasters and well, we don't have sales tax ;)  We do have income tax, but it's not too horrible.  You can get to the mountains or the beach in about an hour, and we're close to Seattle.  Doesn't get much better than Portland honestly :)

Visit first a FEW times.  Don't just come in the summer, becaue it will trick you and you will love it!  Our summers are smazing and that's why people live here, but then they don't last through the fall/winter/spring.  We get some snow in the winter...typically 3 inches or so, about 4-5 days each winter.  Last year was a fluke and we got 2 feet of snow at once, which I have never seen here before.  Portland is very eco-conscious and very bike friendly.  It's also great for families.  I really love Portland and am very happy here.  Come visit in the summer, and then spend a week in December or January, so you can see both sides.  Seriously, it's only nice and sunny from April-September, and then it's grey and misty/rainy the rest of the year.  And it's dark at 4:30 pm in the winter.  Sucks!

  • I live in a Portland suburb called Wilsonville.  I love Wilsonville and all of the cities here (Tigard, Lake Oswego, Tualatin, etc.) and I absolutely adore Portland.  It is such a beautiful city plus it isn't too big.

I adore where I live and I hope to never move!  I also feel like it's a fabulous place to raise a family.

  • I looooove it here, and as others are saying, would never want to move! I also live in Beaverton. Portland is a 10 or 15 minute drive right in to downtown, and everthing is pretty accessible whether its on the westside or eastside of the river. A friend from Florida vacationed here with her family and loved it. She said she has never seen such a clean clear crisp spot, and raved about our beaches! Spring, summer and fall here are great, but yes, winters can be a bit dreary. You should make a trip in the winter/fall to check out Mt. Hood and the bend area, and summer to enjoy Portland and the coast. I also love that Seattle is an easy drive up I-5 and San Fransisco, though a bit father, is a cheap shuttle flight away (or a good drive) away. We don't have a bad pocket of state in Oregon, so you get to enjoy the whole spread!

  • It was great to read all of these responses as my husband is going to Portland on Thursday for an interview for a job promotion.  We shall see what happens, but it's good to hear it's a nice place in the event we end up having to move there!  It will be very difficult for me to deal with the rain/gloominess of the winters, though, as I have been raised in Texas!  As they say in Texas, if you don't like the weather, wait a day and it will change!  Not so true about there so that would be an adjustment! :(  Glad to know there are good things about the place, though.  I hear the southwest area is pretty much the best area to live in?  Is this true??

I have 2 friends that moved here from Texas (Their husbands both work with me as we bought their tiny 2 man company)... They both grew up in Houston and one of them misses Houston immensely (she loves thunderstorms and hates snow..) but really I think she misses her family more than anything.. The other friend LOVES it here and could never move back to Texas :)

We lived in Texas for 4 years when I was younger, and my husband is from Kentucky.. We both have said we'll take the cold over the humidity ANY DAY :)
