Trying to Get Pregnant

Those that have had HSG &/or LAP

My RE told me I need to have an HSG &/or a LAP. I think she is pushing the LAP b/c she said she could do the HSG while I was out for the LAP, and get it done all at once. The problem is, I feel like she is pushing me to have a LAP. Like it is just the standard first thing she does with all her patients to identify all the problems right way. I have had a hysterosonogram which is basically the same thing as an HSG but with saline instead of dye, so I know how it feels.

She said they try to do all the tests first b/c if they start mixing tests with things the insurance won't cover, they try not to cover the tests. But, I don't really feel like I need to have a surgery first thing ya know? I just don't want to have the HSG and then if she doesnt' find anything, then what>? She just says ok well now we have to have the LAP.......

What do you guys think? Those of you that have had these did you do an HSG and then a few months later have a LAP? I really would like to just have an HSG, try some things, and if that doesn't work maybe have the LAP in a few months.

 Thanks for your help GP!

  • I had mine during my Hysterscopy (very similar to LAP). I imagine that it's a lot more pleasant to have it done while you are asleep.

For this child I prayed, and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of him.

I have had an hysteroscopy too. But a LAP is more invasive right>?

  • I have had both - I had my lap in July and HSG in August.  MY doc did an HSG during the lap but they aren't always as accurate when done that way because they don't use the x-ray - just do it visually with the camera they stick in you (at least that is they way I understand it).

What is she looking for with the lap?  Endo?  In most cases there is really no way to diagnose endo except to have the lap.  If not endo then I would ask about having the HSG first and then the lap if the HSG comes back clear.  Especially since you may have to have the HSG after the lap anyway.

    Hope that made sense.

  • According to your siggy, your sono (or actually the u/s part) revealed an ovarian cyst.  Chances are there could be other things that won't show up in the HSG.  My HSG was all clear, but I still have an endometrioma and a uterine septum (whiched showed on the sono).  Why would you want to waste medicated cycles if there is something wrong that you can't see?  I will be having Lap surgery and hysteroscopic surgery next cycle, and then moving to Clomid.

Yes, it is.  I'd say the decision is up to you.  If you're not ready for it, then don't do it.  She may not want to move ahead with treatments if you do though.  I'd base my decision on how long you've been TTC, other problems you've had, and your comfort level.

Yes that made sense, thank you! --Yeah she doesn't think I am ovulating and b/c of my history with polyps she thinks there is a good chance I might have endo or PCOS. Can you diagnose PCOS without a LAP?

     - I don't know I guess really it would make more sense to just have the LAP and get it all out of the way.

I don't know about diagnosing PCOS, sorry.  Honestly, the lap is really not that bad.  Slightly invasive but not terribly.  I only had 2 small incisions, one in my belly button and another about 1/2 inch long by my left hip.  Recovery was pretty easy.

That makes me feel better. I think the LAP would be the best way to go. Now..... I have to figure out how to have this done and lnot tell my Dad (who works in the same office as me) ....lol
