Pregnant after 35

prenatal vitamins on an empty stomach? anyone on Synthroid?

I just recently read my packaging which says to take my prenates on an empty stomach. (I have always taken them with a meal)

I also take Thyroid pills (which I know to take 1hr prior to a meal) and was just told yesterday that I shouldn't consume anything with fiber within 4hrs of taking the medication and I should avoid soy altogether as it effects the absorbsion of the Synthroid. Soy is in EVERYTHING! There goes my Fiber One cereal with soymilk and dried apricots! (I eat tons of fiber yet still haven't pooped since Wed. LOL)

It's my responsibility to read the prescription inserts I realize but, one would think my Endocrinologist might have told me this 22 yrs ago when I first started taking the medication!?

Re: prenatal vitamins on an empty stomach? anyone on Synthroid?

  • Wow, I can't imagine taking vitamins on an empty stomach. They sometimes make me nauseous even when I take them with food. I will 100% for sure puke if I take them on an empty stomach.

I don't know about the thyroid medicien, but if it is such abig deal about the fiber and soy then yes, it seems like your Dr would have mentioned it somewhere along the line. Soy can be avoided but fiber is a hard one to avoid. Has your medicine been working fine while taking it with fiber and soy for all these years?.

  • Hi

I take generic synthroid, and my Endo told me to be sure not to take my PNV near the meds. So I take the PNV at night, usually 2-3 hours after dinner, but sometimes i have to eat a cracker or toast with it because of nausea.  I take the meds in the early am on a restroom trip. I've never heard of the soy issue! I have to so my Endo every 8 wks to monitor my meds so be sure to keep on top of that, the Dr. that did my NT scan also mentioned it after reviewing my history. HTH

  • hi, I take synthroid every day (175mcg) had half my thyroid removed 5 years ago...I keep the bottle next to my bed, wake up, take my pill then move on for the day.  Since being pregnant, haven't adhered to the one hour no food rule, all of the time, feel too sick if I don't eat something :(  My TSH levels are staying ok, even with the food,

I switched to taking the PNV's at night and have taken to splitting up my Folate and extra folic acid and baby aspirin between breakfast and lunch.  I take the PNV's within an hour of dinner, they are way too hard on my stomach.

It seems to be working, but you need to make sure to get your TSH checked each trimester, pg messes with the thyroid too.

I think the 4 hour no fiber rule is to make sure you don't "remove" the synthroid from your system before it has a chance to work....but given the constipation of pregnancy, I don't think it applies :)

    Hope it all

  • I take Levothyroxine (another thyroid med similar to synthroid) and was told not to take that an the prenatal at the same time.  I take the prenatal in the morning on an empty stomach and wait an hour to eat (never heard about the fiber thing either) and the prenatal at night (was not told mine need to be on an empty stomach though).
  • I've been on synthroid for the last 7 yrs and I have never heard anything about taking them 1 hr prior to eating and not w/ anything containing fiber.  I take mine about 10 mins before eating and have never had any problems.
