Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Just started pumping...a bunch of questions

If you are breastfeeding and pump...

How often do you pump?

How often do you feed LO?

How many oz. does LO typically eat during one feeding?

How do you heat the breast milk?

Can you re-refrigerate a bottle after it has been thawed for a feeding if LO doesn't finish the whole thing?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Just started pumping...a bunch of questions

  • 1.  I pump in the morning after her first feeding and either once or twice at night after she goes to bed (depending on when I plan to go to bed/if I need more milk/if I'm feeling lazy.)  I also pump some afternoons when LO is at PT daycare.

    2.   Every 2-3 hours during the day.

    3.  3-5 ounces now.  She's always ate about 3 ounces per sitting since starting pumping at 3 weeks.

    4.  Submerging in warm water.  She'll drink her milk cool, just not cold.

    5.  Yup, it's good until the next feeding.  Check out kellymom.com for more info.

NEVER heat BM in the microwave, we use a rocks glass with hot water and put the bottle right in it to heat it up... just to body temp, which is not that warm :)

You can't reheat it again or refrigerate it again after it's been heated, unfortunately.

  • I only pump occasionally since I am home with DS all day everyday.

I breastfeed every 3 hours.  I bottle feed maybe once every other day just to get him used to the bottle.  I should say that he takes the bottle better from my mother or my husband because with me he always tries to turn to my boob to drink.

At 2 weeks, maybe 3 oz per feeding

Heat it by putting it in a bowl of hot water for a minute or two.

If LO doesn't finish the BM bottle, put it in the fridge but you have to use it within 1 hour... otherwise throw it.  For formula, just throw it.

If you are breastfeeding and pump...

How often do you pump? nurse/pump at 2 am and 6 am, pump at 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm.

How often do you feed LO? on demand while I'm not at work.

How many oz. does LO typically eat during one feeding? about 3 oz

How do you heat the breast milk? I don't. He'll take a cold bottle. Oh, do you mean how do I heat frozed BM? I just run it under warm water for a minute or so.

Can you re-refrigerate a bottle after it has been thawed for a feeding if LO doesn't finish the whole thing? Yes, for 24 hours.

    Thanks in advance!!

I try to pump every 3-4 hours, except I've taken to letting myself skip a session in the middle of the night now that DD's STTN. But really, it's come down to me just making sure I pump for every bottle DD consumes in order to keep up with her needs. So, if SO gives her an expressed bottle or a bottle of formula while I'm at work, I make sure to squeeze in an extra pumping sometime at night after she's in bed.

I just feed her whenever she's hungry. Now that she's STTN, she's pretty much starving all day, seemingly trying to make up for what she misses at night.

She's usually alright for a while after 4-5 ounces, but sometimes she plows through two 4 ounce bottles without flinching.

I used to heat it by filling a glass with hot water and setting the bottle in it for 5 minutes. Now I've realized she doesn't care if its cold.

    And yes, I've re-refrigerated BM.

  • Here's the link to Kellymom.com that says that BM can be reused up to 4 hours after the feeding. https://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/reusing-expressedmilk.html

  • I pump about every 4 hours.  I really, really should pump every 3 since that DD eats every 3.  This is during the day. If DD wakes up during the night I feed her then pump. If she doesn't, I don't pump during the night but make sure I pump right before I go to bed.

DD eats roughly every 3 hours

DD is now eating a little over 4 oz per feeding.  When I started EP'ing at 2 months she ate 2 oz and has slowly moved up since.

I use a bottle warmer to heat the milk.  I used to run it under the hot water.

Yes, I save the BM is DD hasn't finished her entire bottle and add more to it for her next feeding and pop it back in the fridge.  If she doesn't eat all of it at the next feeding I get rid of it.

Here is a link for guidelines for re-using breastmilk.  Kellymom.com is a great resource for breastfeeding Q & A.

I can't make it clicky because I'm on a MAC.  Good Luck!

  • I pump once overnight, once in the mrning, and once late morning. I feed on demand. Right now its ever 5 hrs at night and every 2-4 hrs during the day. I have no idea how much during nursing. At 8 weeks she ate between 2.5oz and 4oz according to LC. Pumped milk she'll take 4 to 5oz. I swirl it around in a bowl of hot water until it feels warm. I usually do. You aren't supposed to because it loses most of what makes bm bm. But I'm usually I save it for the nighttime and use it to tank her up.

If you are breastfeeding and pump...

How often do you pump? After her AM feeding and whenever I am away from her for more than 3 hours.

How often do you feed LO? She eats about every 2-3 hours but she is going through a growth spurt right now.

How many oz. does LO typically eat during one feeding? 3-4

How do you heat the breast milk? Run hot water into a glass and then place the bottle in the glass for a minute or so.

Can you re-refrigerate a bottle after it has been thawed for a feeding if LO doesn't finish the whole thing? Yes, but I have never done this myself. LO rarely takes a bottle from me, she usually just has them when DH is at home alone with her or when my aunt is watching her.

    Thanks in advance!!
