How Did You Tell Your Family?

Hi All,

I've been more of a lurker than a poster, but I think that's about to change. Just found out last night that we're going to have a baby! We're sooo excited, scared, speechless, etc. You name it, we're feeling it!

Ever since we started trying, I've been excited about the prospect of telling our families we're pregnant. Did any of you come up with any fun, creative ways to surprise your family with the news? I'd love to do something out of the ordinary and more exciting than just blurting it out. Any ideas you want to share?

My mom got a children's book about going to grandma's house. We wrapped it up and gave it to her at dinner right before she left for a big trip but before our first U/S.

IL's - we made a little video with family pictures dropping - started with grandparent's pictures, then parent's pictures, then our picture and then the u/s picture. We put it to the song "Baby what a big surprise" which was very cool because since it's so old you didn't know what song it was until the actual line which was timed so the U/S pic showed up then. I'm probably not describing it very well and should post it to view!

Congratulations and keep posting! We had funning telling our families. My mom lives close so we had her over for dinner (not unusual). Before she got here we put a hamburger bun in the oven. We're fixing dinner and DH asks her to open the oven. She kind of looks at him funny but does. She's looking at the bun, totally confused. I said, "Hmmm, what could that be a metaphor for....a bun, in the oven..." and then she totally got it and started laughing and exclaiming.

The timing was perfect for telling DH's parents, they live in Michigan and we already had tickets to go visit. MIL is an amazing knitter, so I bought a pattern for a baby bunting and when we got there we told them we had a little gift for them. As we're handing her the bag, DH asks if they're going to come for Christmas this year. They say something about oh they hope to if they can work it out with tickets and vacation time. As MIL pulls the pattern out, DH says, "Well, if you can't make it for Christmas we were hoping you could come in late March." FIL got it immediately and MIL right after him.

For my dad, he's our go-to guy for financial advice, so we called him and Jeff asked for input on college 529 plans, "Since we'll be needing to open one next year."

It's so much fun sharing the news! Oh, and when I told my coworkers I told them I had some good gossip to share. Let us know what you end up doing!

Not terribly creative, but to tell my MIL we wrapped up a bib that said "I love Grandma" and gave it to her for Christmas. My family we just blurted it out, my sister got pregnant and few months before and already did the grandpa gift way.

We decided to make a calendar for both sets of our parents with family photos in it then on the due month we highlighted the due date. We said to our parents we had a christmas present to give them early & Mom was like "No we will wait to open it on christmas day" & I'm like no do it now!!! Here is a photos of what it looked like -

Mom nearly missed it as she was too busy looking at the photos!!! Then with our friends we organised a lunch out with all our close friends & after everyone had put their lunch orders in we ran off & got the cake from the waitress, walked back with DH in front of me so no one could see & said "Hey guys what do you think of the cake" - they were all shocked & super excited!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I lost both my parents a couple of years ago, so I never got to tell mine - way to put a dampner of things, Kate! - and my in-laws guessed before we got to tell them, lol! Honest to goodness . . . . .

Congratulations!

We had an early sonogram at 6w5d and asked for a copy. (It was basically a black bump surrounded by static.) We copied it, put it into photo frames for each grandparent to be, then wrapped up the frames as gifts and made up reasons to give them (early bday gift for one, I forget for the other). We were able to videotape my MIL opening hers and finding out. We sent the other one to my mom in NC and told her she needed to open it while on the phone with us so we could explain certain details about it. We were so excited we forgot to tape the phone call, though. At least giving it as a gift allowed us the excuse to videotape the reaction!

We were boring and just called everyone. We were soooo excited and at the time I was about 6 weeks along. We couldn't wait to share the news. In hind sight though, I feel we should have waited. I had a ton of bleeding through about 12 weeks and it was really unsure if the pregnancy would last. If we were to have a 2nd child, I think we will wait until 12 weeks or so to say anthing. I guess you never really know if something will happen, but for our piece of mind we don't want to have to un-tell.

We gave my dad a father's day card and wrote that he would become a grandfather and the due date. He burst into tears. We told ILs when DH called him "Grandpa" in the middle of a dinner conversation. We also told some friends when we were taking a group photo. DH offered to take it and said "say, Katherine's pregnant" before he snapped the photo. That was really fun and half the people couldn't believe it for several minutes afterward. Good luck coming up with something.
