High-Risk Pregnancy

Question for GD ladies..

Ok, I've been on insulin(NPH) now for almost 3 weeks, once a day at night right before my snack. I started on 10 cc and then he raised it to 16 cc when my numbers weren't low enough. I was just at the doctors yesterday for another u/s(I get them every 3-4 weeks), and he raised it again to 24 cc. I've asked before and many of you said that you should see a difference right away, but this morning when I took my fasting blood sugar number, it was a 117!!!! It was higher than any other number I've had since being put on insulin. I was so frustrated that I actually broke down into tears because it makes me feel like I'm not doing something right. The doctor said to wait a few days to see what happens, because I called them after testing a few times within a few minutes an my numbers seemed to be all over. I started with 117, then I got a 101, then 108, then 95....??? I only retested because the 117 seemed high and the diabetic consultant said to retest if it seemed high because sometimes it can be the strip..but the lady at the office, who was a bit rude, told me that my numbers may not change overnight and that if I test more than once obviously the numbers will be different. I dont know. I'm so upset and frustrated that it makes me worried about the baby. The doc said the u/s went wonderfully. We are now 100% sure its a boy(thats all he wanted to do was show off his boy parts). The tech said he weighed about 13 oz, I dont know if thats good or not but I'm assuming it is because the doc didn't mention anything about it. So to get to my question: Should I really be seeing an effect on my number right away? Will my lack of sleep(I get up 5-6 times a night now) affect my number? I just feel at a loss right now.

Re: Question for GD ladies..

  • I have problems with my fasting too.  I started at 10 NPH, then 15, now 18.  It takes me about 3 days to see results.  It's definitely NOT immediate.  My doctor also told me it would NOT be immediate.  I have no idea why, but its true - I have a three day rule and then things start to change!

  • same for me... it took 3-4 days before I started to see a real difference in my numbers after going to 2 shots/day. The Endo nurse told me this is normal and I won't see results right away b/c it takes y our body a few days to regulate itself with the new amount of insulin.

  • I am not on insulin but I am on glyburide and it took a while to see results. Also there are other key things that play apart in bad fasting #'s. Like what type of snack you are having before bed and what time you are waking up. I have not been able to sleep-in since getting diagnosed. I wake between 6:45am and 8:00am, any later I have higher fasting #'s. As far as I know waking several times in the night has no effect on #'s. But I did notice that once my meds started working properly I was waking less frequently.

Also it is normal for them to adjust your meds more frequently in the beg until they get your #'s under control. My fasting #'s were between 100-125 for atleast a month before we got them under control. GL!

  • My doctor has been adjusting my insulin dose very regularly since I got put on it at 32 weeks (I take Humulin N and R twice per day). Don't be discouraged by it. Heck, he bumped my numbers up at my appointment on Tuesday again (39w1d). I will expect another dosage change next week if this baby doesn't make his appearance by then!

When I first started on the insulin, I was faxing my blood sugar #s to him sometimes 2x/week and he would make adjustments between appointments.

Just know that it is a constant work in progress and it will be until the end of your pregnancy as the baby and placenta grow. Don't get upset and beat yourself up about this - there are so many changing variables involved!

I promise it gets easier -- at least it has for me. If you are still feeling discouraged, talk to your doctor about how you are feeling about it all. My OB is kind of a gruff man, yet he goes out of his way to make sure that I don't get discouraged about things, I am in his care, he will get it under control, and that I am not to be hard on myself about it all.

I had no clue that it takes 3-4 days. ?I too thought it was supposed to be immediate, and was not thrilled with a higher number I had for breakfast today (today is day 2 of the higher amount of units.) ?That actually makes me feel a lot better !!?

  • I have noticed that if I don't get enough sleep, or if I have to get up much earlier than usual, my morning number is higher.
  • I started out on 20u nph at night and have worked my way up to 46u nph now and i'm still running like 120's! So I'm going to give it till tomorrow am and then I have to call and have them up it again.

My breakfast numbers are always high now. I take 14u at breakfast fast acting and for breakfast i either have a ham/cheese/egg on half multi grain english muffin with a glass of water (tried milk makes them higher) and then or the samething on wheat bread no high fructose corn syrup in it either! It equals out to be 1 carb (since I dont do the milk) and my numbers are still high any suggestions?
