and I "know" you guys better than the crafting board ladies! Plus, so many of y'all are such great knitters!
I started on a *baby hat using size 8 circular needles (16") just like this book told me to do. I have casted on my 56 stitches, but 56" won't reach around to the other needle to join in the round (is that the right terminology?).
What did I do wrong? I *think* I used the kind of yarn they suggested (4- worsted?), so I'm really confused. Is there something basic that I'm missing?
Ugh. I like trying new things, but I hate when I suck at them! ![]()

Re: I need knitting ("in the round") help...
count about half way down your stitches then pull the cord thru (between two stitches) and thread the rest onto the other needle... it won't break your chain or cause any problems (i just try to move where i pull it thru every once in a while to avoid getting that laddering effect)
or if it is too tight, pull thru in 2 different places. then once you've emptied the needles, push everything around again
They are Clover brand bamboo needles (all they had at Michaels and I'm an impatient lady- I buy what they've got!) They're needletip to needletip 16".
Probably too tight...

You can get a longer needle (like 36" or so) and do the magic loop. I buy most of my needles at least 24" and then either ML or use two circulars.
Here's a magic loop video:

Here's a two circulars video:

Let us know how it goes!
Ok- this made a lightbulb go off! Thanks!
I wish I could run out and buy some longer circs right now to try it, but unfortunately I haven't mastered the "run out" with the 2 week old yet! haha Maybe I'll get DH to run by Michael's on his way home from work!

can't you just pull the loop thru what you already have? if its not going all the way around now then it should still work (just won't have as much loop sticking out thru the stitches.
i've done socks in the round on pretty short wires and still had to pull them thru (infant/newborn socks) but just a bit.
