Making Baby Food

For those of you who make your own baby food.  Can you tell me what you make and how you store it?  Looking for ideas and don't really want to put any money into it other than the food itself.

Re: Making Baby Food

  • Ziplock baggies for when it's frozen

Ice Cube trays to freeze it

I got the Beaba Babycook, but a steamer and blender or food processor does the same thing.

    Wholesomebabyfood.com will help a lot

  • If I make a lot I`ll freeze it in ice cube trays.  But mostly, I`ll just make enough for a few days b/c we are still just getting started on solids.

  • I make it in the blender and freeze in ice cube trays (I only have two), then store in freezer bags. Super simply, fun and healthy!

  • I just did a batch last night - I steamed a bag of baby carrots and then pureed it in my food processor with some of the steaming water. Then I spooned it into ice cube trays and froze it. Once they were frozen put them in Ziploc bags. I also did butternut squash - baked it until tender and pureed with some of the carrot water. Same freezing proceess. Next up...bananas and applesauce (going apple picking this weekend)!

  • I have made so far: sweet potatoes, squash, green beans, pears, peas, carrots, peaches, and oatmeal.  I just cook them accordingly, puree using my magic bullet, and use regular ice cube trays to freeze.  Once frozen pop them out and put them in separate freezer bags!
  • I make: sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, peaches, pears, plums, green beans, and pumpkin. I bake or steam everything, puree in the food processer, and portion it into ice cube trays to freeze. Once it is frozen, I store in gallon size ziplock bags. The only things I bought that I didn't already have were a few more ice cube trays. If you don't already have a food processor or blender, you will need one. I have a Cuisinart mini-prep, which is about $30. I have saved a ton of money by making my own food.

  • We make whatever fruits/veggies we have around.  It's really cheap and easy...steam, puree, eat/freeze.

  • Everything everybody else says. I use the food processor or our blender but there are times I have used a potato masher. It's more work, but if you want to go really low budget, you can try that!

ETA: Oh, I jus saw how young your baby is. I'm not sure the masher would get it "pureed" enough.

  • Lets see, so far we've made peas, carrots, peaches, sweet potatoes, and avocado.  When the pears are ripe, I'll be making those next.  I didn't buy any fancy equipment.  I steam the veggies/fruit in a steamer basket in a pot that has one inch of water in it.  Then I puree them in a blender.  I have little 1/2 cup size rubbermaid containers that I put servings in (about 2-3 ounces in each one) and freeze them right in those containers.  I put the containers in the refrigerator the day before I plan on feeding them to DS so they can thaw overnight.  It is also great to have them in these containers because it makes them so easy to just throw in the diaper bag and take with us when we go out.  And we don't have to worry about transferring any frozen food from ice cube trays to ziploc bags.  And, we don't have to buy stock in ziploc bags over the next few months either.  It is just easier for us that way.

We're saving SO much money.  A 2 pack(that is two 2.5 oz containers) of Gerber pureed carrots costs $97 at my commissary.  I bought a bag of baby carrots for $1.50; didn't even steam/puree half of the bag and it made 5 containers!

  • Pretty much what all of the PP's said.  I have a "make-your-own baby food" cookbook at home that was a gift.  I don't know the name of it.  I use recipes from it and wholesomebabyfood.com.  The only previously mentioned food that I don't freeze is bananas and avocado.  I hate how they turn brown.....it doesn't mean they've gone bad, but it just bugs me. lol
  • I've made green beans, peas, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, peaches, and apples.

     Same process everyone else said.

  • Same process as everyone else.  I have made: apples, bananas, avocado, sweet potatoes, green beans, butternut squash, apricots, nectarines, peaches, plums, carrots and peas.  Next up: pears, mangoes, pumpkin.
