Stay at Home Moms

evening in the ER

With my 12th week of pregnancy came a lot more dizziness and still not the apetite needed to run after my 14 month old. I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks in between and drink as much fluids as i can remember to unless i become really thirsty yet in the midst of morning sickness (which should be more properly named "anytime of the day sickness") not everything stays down. I do my best to replenish myself but again which a toddler and nausea it's no easy task.?

Yesterday the temperature broke 80 so i took Aiden and met up with a girlfriend and her 8 month old at barnes and noble for a decaf coffee and some conversation before heading to the park to let the boys play. I had eaten waffles for breakfast and was snacking on quaker rice cakes.. one of the few things that don't upset my stomach and thought i'd be ok for awhile. By the time we got to the park my head was swirling. Any ounce of energy i had that morning was gone. I just had my rice cakes on hand and a bottle of water but that didn't seem to be doing anything. i immediately went into panic mode. Just the way your body feels when it's dehydrated and hungry.. i hate feeling that way. My friend was gracious enough to stop at the store with me and grab me some juice and nuts to tie me over and when we got to her house i scarfed down a sandwich and yogurt. After a half hour i still wasn't feeling right.. actually i felt like i was going to topple over. The triage nurse at my doctor's office had recommended that if i rested and had water and food and i still wasn't feeling better i should go to the emergency room. For what must have been a good hour at least of that jittery, anxious feeling never seeming quite full and with nausea once again rearing its ugly head at me we decided t go to the emergency room. It wasnt until i was in the AC laying down with my 3rd bottle of water that i even started to get my nerves to relax a little. After what seemed like an eternity i was hooked up to IV fluids to replenish what i had lost when i threw up all my meals from that day in the hospital, and was given something to finally settle my stomach.

When i returned home that evening all my dad could say to me was.. "how hard is it to eat and drink some water?" all i could do was laugh. In all my years i have NEVER had an issue with eating or dehydration until i became pregnant with this baby. ?He makes it sound as if i had been battling an eating disorder. ?A lot of times this past week especially , thats exactly how it feels. Forcing myself to eat despite the nausea and vomiting i know will inevitably follow at some point in the day ( i have been getting sick every day of every week for the past 5 weeks) my dr. finally prescribed me with an medicine that should help reduce the morning sickness and help me gain back and appetite.?

This morning i am on my second breakfast and 3rd glass of water and i still don't feel quite full or right. It does concern me that i've been having so much trouble with this, especially since i didn't with my son. I had a few weeks of nausea and would only get sick if i ate something that didn't agree with me. Hopefully this will all pass soon and i will be feeling and eating normal. Hell at this point i wouldn't mind all the crazy food cravings that come later in pregnancy. i just want to be feeling healthy again and have some energy to enjoy the pregnancy and playing with my son.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, any advice on how to stay on top of this and manage my toddler? Any little bit would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading.. i know it was super long.?

Re: evening in the ER

  • I never got totally dehydrated when I was pregnant, but I did spend several days in the ER because I was SO sick with my pregnancy...I tried zofran..and it's the only thing that really helped....it was awful being sick all the time...I hope it gets better for you good luck

  • It sounds like your doctor knows about this, right? (My first suggestion is to be sure your doctor knows about this.)  Second, I would just always have snacks in my bag, as well as your favorite drinks on hand.  (Nuts, string cheese, fruit...)  I would say be sure that you are eating every 3 hours or so, just a little something and drinking plenty of fluids---all the time.  You really need a ton of fluids, particularly in the beginning.  Your body is actually producing more blood so that the baby has that and the placenta is formed, etc.  And, lastly, I would take it easy.  Pace yourself and maybe until you are past the 1st trimester, put your feet up. :)  Feel better.

  • Dr does know. I have a followup appointment in the next few days so we will see what he has to say. otherwise im hoping that medicine for the nausea helps and will definatly be taking it easy for awhile and drinking/ snacking more. i think its easy to forget how vulnerable you can get when you're 1st pregnant. :p thanks for all the suggestions.?
  • What I was told in one of my prenatal classes was that the first trimester is all about survival.  She said obviously try to eat as healthy as you can but if all you can eat or all that sounds good are Slurpees and Sour Patch Kids, then go for it - At least you are getting something.
  • No advice, just wanted to say I'm so sorry you're going through this!  :(

  • Sorry you're going through this. I went through something similar during my pregnancy. Besides morning sickness, I would get low blood sugar. Just from this post it sounds like maybe you do too. My doctor told me that it's important to snack and eat often and to make sure with snacks to pair carbs with protein. I can't recall exactly why, but it had to do with making sure you don't get a spike then drop in blood sugar levels. So I would eat apple slices with peanut butter, cheese and crackers, fruit and yogurt...
