using daycare for a day off?

i really feel like i need a break - just one day - from the endless work of being a parent with a full-time job. dh suggested that we both take off work on a weekday, but still send ds to daycare (we pay either way).

i'm feeling totally guilty about this, but i think it will be good for my health and sanity to spend a day in bed watching movies.

has anyone done this? what do you think??

Re: using daycare for a day off?

  • I usually do this to get stuff done around the house.  I will take him in late and pick him up early though.

  • I have totally done that and I don't think you should feel guilty about it.  Happy mom & dad = happy baby.

  • Do it, take care  of yourself for a day, you'll be a better Mom for it.  Don't feel guilty, I wouldn't.
  • sure why not. i don't do it all the time but when he was younger i totally needed these breaks to SLEEP! i had the house to myself and I would sleep several hours, do some cleaning, maybe get a massage...I only felt a tinge guilty.

  • I've done it, you're paying for it anyway right?  We all need a break, don't feel guilty.

  • Are you kidding?! This is one of the benefits of having a daycare - I don't feel guilty at all for doing this (granted, I think I've only done it once). You pay anyway, and you need a break, and it's great that the two of you could take the day off together. Go for it!
  • I always keep my nanny when I have a day off. I get stuff done, do something for myself, and then let her go home early.

Don't feel guilty. It is much deserved!!

  • thanks everyone - you're awesome for being so supportive!we're doing it! :)
  • MH and I have done this. We did this on our anniversary this past June becuase we didn't do anythign ofr our first last year since we had just bought a house and I was 30wks PG at the time. It was really nice. I also plan on doing this when I order the wallpaper for the living room and the chandalier for the dining room and the runner for the stairs. MH and I are going to send DS to daycare while we bang through all these home projects in a day. Of course we will pick him up a little earlier then usual.

  • I have done it a couple of times (without DH) and it is really nice (minus the little bit of guilt).  Each time has become a little bit easier.  I have done the early drop off and early pick up sometimes depending on the day.

I also used the time once to spend some extra time at day care just talking to the teacher.  I normally don't get to spend this time there so that was kind of nice too.

Enjoy your time if you take it!

  • Well, you would pay for a babysitter for a night out right?  Here you have already paid for your babysitter so go for it!
  • I've done it and I do it, guilt free.  Not all the time but sometime you need to for your sanity, for the sleep, for getting things done, or just being lazy.  I don't do it often but I think it's a need back we all need.

    DO IT!!

  • I resigned my position as of 9/14 and don't start my new job until Monday. I kept Morgan home last week but she has gone to DC every day this week! I have to pay regardless so I figured she should go. I'm posting from my iPhone so I apologize for the lack of paragraphs, if there aren't any.
  • We've done it so we can have a "day off" together. We don't know anyone who can babysit for us so we can go out for dinner so the only time we go out is if my parents happen to be in town. We took off a Friday and just spent the day at a mall, went to a movie, ate lunch, browsed around.
  • DO IT!!  And don't feel guilty about it, at all.  Period.  Mommies need their time off to recharge their sanity meter.  Seriously.
