Weird Idea? Toy swap?

Have you ever heard of swapping toys with other moms for a little bit?  Just so the kids would have something different to play with for a week or two.

If a friend approached you to see if you were interested in doing something like this, would you?

Here's why I ask:  I can think of about a hundred other toys I would like the children that I watch to experience, but I don't have the funds to buy them all.  In my dreams...  Anyway, I thought if I talked to some other moms I know to see if they would want to switch toys that were able to be cleaned (that's a big one to germ-freak-me) it would allow the kids I watch to experience more new things than I can afford...

  • i don't have any kiddos yet but I think the idea is really smart. I think there is actually a website that does this too. I don't know the cost because it was a long time ago that I saw it (sorry i know not super helpful) But if you had a group of moms that was willing I'd say give it a shot.

  • I like that idea!  I have a lot of younger baby/toddler toys that DS doesn't play with, but I want to have at some point for another baby (someday).  It would be great if those toys would get some use!

  • I think it's a good idea.  It's economical to boot. I would consider it depending on the toy.  Unfortunately kids are pretty rough on toys so I would be bummed if an expensive toy got ruined. Would you split costs of toys? What happens if someone's toy gets destroyed (dog chews it, gets lost)?

I rotate K's toys.  She has one set for a few weeks and then they get put away and the other group comes out. It keeps things fresh for her and keeps from having our family room totally taken over (sort of). Each group has toys she really loves.

  • https://www.babyplays.com/  I'm not sure if this is the only one, but I heard of this a couple months ago.  I have not used it though.
  • I would be more interested if it was a permanent thing - getting rid of toys your kid has outgrown or no longer likes. I would be way too worried about a toy getting lost or broken if it was something we were just borrowing.
  • Thanks for the reponses so far.  I guess I was just thinking of saying to someone on facebook for example, "I saw that cool parachute at your house and I have a ride-on firetruck that I think so and so would like to play with, do you want to trade for a week?"  Like would you be totally offended if I was a FB friend of yours and asked that?  Because I don't have any superclose friends that are moms, just lots of people I see at holiday parties or whatever, a few times a year... so would that be weird?
  • I would definitely not if it was a temporary thing and would not do it if it was someone I see rarely, because of the cost of replacing a toy that could be lost or broken too.

Now if it were a big get together once or twice a year where for example we all bring toys and switch with other nesties that would be nice.  But I would only do a permanent one.  :)  Good luck though.
