My DH has T1, as does his cousin and as did his grandfather. My grandfather also had T1 from his early 20s until he died at 60 from severe complications and poor control. It's pretty much riddled throughout both our families. We've done a ton of research, and per the recommendation of DH's endo, my OB/GYN, and JDRF, we're banking our baby's cord blood with a great local bank. It will cost $1600 for the collection and first year's storage, then $120 a year after. I think that's pretty reasonable, especially considering that our child will have a 10-15% chance of developing T1 (we met with a genetic counselor who specializes in immune and endocrine disorders, and she gave us the #s based on family history). I've been following the clinical trials and the results are incredibly promising (the University of Florida study has had great success with stem cell implants in recently diagnosed children). Just wondering if anyone else is banking and why/why not. Are you taking any other measures to prevent or anticipate your child developing T1? Is anyone else in your family a diabetic?

Re: Type I Diabetics: Cord Blood Banking?
I would like to bank, but it's too expensive for our budget.
I am type 1, but the only other diabetic we know of was my mom's grandmother, and that was type 2. So, I dont know if baby has a likely chance of getting type 1 or not (I hope not), but we're not doing anything specific to prevent or anticipate it.
Hmmm...this has been such a difficult discussion in our house. I was diagnosed with Type 1 last year --dr's think that my first pregnancy was what brought it on b/c we have no family history, no health, weight issues, etc. I am told the chance that my kids could also have type 1 is 2-3%...small, but still really scary.
For this reason, as well as the money that we cannot afford, I am being optimistic and hoping for the best so we are not banking. This has been a very difficult decision, but I am also hoping for a cure if we do need to ever have to worry about it. Ugh, I have a pit in my stomach as I write this. Best wishes to you...and all of our little ones !
