Babies: 0 - 3 Months

would like some input on NB vs 0-3 clothes

I have TONSSSS of 0-3 clothes and probably only about 7-10 NB outfits.

Doc predicts I will have an 8lb baby as long as I don't "go early."  So, I don't want to have a ton of clothes I can't use.  I am tempted to go invest in a few more NB outfits and just leave them in the bag in case I need them.

Any input you have would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

  • It totally depends on the baby - DD was wearing NB clothes even after she was over 9lbs.  She still has a couple of pairs of NB pants that fit.

  • My DD is almost 12 lb and can still fit into her Carter's NB
  • DD was 8lbs 3 oz and is still in mostly NB clothes. We have started putting her in 0-3 from time to time, but its still a bit big on her (she was 9 1/2 lbs a week ago).

I was glad we had a decent stash of NB size stuff.. she would have been swimming in 0-3 at birth!

  • Ds wore nb clothes for several weeks-but we had him in sleepers and those gown things-we had like 5-6 newborn things and that was plenty for us (we used them mostly at night, gowns during the day).  If you got some and kept the tags on, that couldn't hurt, could it?

  • I would get some- DS was in NB for a month- he was 7 lbs. I had to go out when we got home from the hospital and try to find stuff and it sucked. We had a freak storm and didn't have any NB clothes that were warm enough.

  • DS was 8lbs 3oz, wore the majority of his newborn clothes for about 2 weeks (when he weighed 9lbs).
  • DD was in NB clothes for about a month and a half.
  • as long as they are not Gerber NB you'll be fine. Don't waste your $ on NB. I would imagine what you have now is fine.  It will be sad putting away your fave NB outfits when LO outgrows them.
Besides- it's ALWAYS better to have an outfit a little too big than a little too small!

  • As PPs said...depends on baby.  My ped predicted I would have a "big" baby, well over 8lbs. I ended up with a 7.56lb and all the 0-3 were too big.  Since it was summer, I kept DD in a onesie most of the time.

  • DD was predicted to be 9 pounds. She was 8.5 and was a week late. She can actually still fit in newborn stuff. She's very long and lean (the pants are getting too short). Honestly, I think 7 to 10 outfits should be plenty. What we needed in newborn size (I sent MIL out because we only had 0-3) was side snap shirts and pants. It was too cool in the AC to not have her legs covered, and I didn't want to put fabric (ie, a onesie or a sleeper) over her cord.

Will the 0-3 gowns I have work?  I really appreciate all of your feedback! I think I am going to get just a few more things and keep the tags on, and use the 0-3 gowns??  Thanks!

  • My 10lb 7 week old stil fits in most of her NB clothes just fine.

  • FWIW DS ended up weighing less than the growth u/s projected.  I didn't have as much NB stuff b/c I thought DS would be bigger but my mom went out and bought a few more NB outfits when it turned out DS was too small for the 0-3 mo. stuff at birth.  I think you have enough to start and can buy more if needed later.
  • my LO grew out of his NB when he was 8 lb., but we only had the carters ones. carters tends to run smaller than baby gap, i've realized. old navy seems to vary by each piece of clothing. i'd say 7-10 NB outfits is plenty. we only had about 7 and we used them for 1 month.
  • Keep the tags on everything!  Then you won't waste all that money for nothing if you do decide to buy a few more NB outfits.  FYI, my LO was 8lbs 9 oz and she was in NB for two weeks... and onesies at that!
  • My son was 5 lb 15 oz when he was born and is now up to around 9 lbs and still mostly in NB clothes. Most of his 0-3 is gigantic, including the gowns. Between the peeing and spitting up, we often go through multiple outfits a day -- I would pick up a pack or two of cheap onesies in NB, just something to tide you over or when you are wearing multiple outfits.

  • It's not necessarily weight but also height.  My DS is really tall so the NB clothes weren't long enough for him and he was grunting and crying because he was so uncomfortable.  At birth, we were already worried that he wouldn't fit it length wise and he fit it almost perfectly (21.5 inch).
  • Natalie was 8 lbs 10 oz when she was born and is probably up to birth weight now and is still in NB clothes. She went down to 7 lbs 15 oz in the hospital and the 0-3 mo clothes were really big on her.

  • I would get a few more newborn outfits.  We had 4, defiantly not enough.  I just thought that he would fit into the 0-3 month clothes quickly.  He was 6 pounds 8 ounces at birth, now 7 pounds.  He is swimming in most newborn clothes right now.  We went and bought some and thankfully family members who came to visit brought some more newborn outfits.  He seems to go through them like crazy.  Spit up and peeing (might not be as bad for a girl) keep us doing laundry.
