2nd Trimester

What CAN i take for a cold?

dang!  I woke w/ a runny nose and sore throat.  and the real crapper is I didn't get it from the boys which means I'll probably give it to them :(  Anyway, is there anything I can take?  Can't remember from my last pg.

Re: What CAN i take for a cold?

  • Here is what is on my ob's website for colds:

    Cold Symptoms
For allergy or cold symptoms, you may take Sudafed or Sinus Tylenol, Robitussin (Plain or DM) for cough, and Sucrets or Chloraseptic Lozenges for sore throat associated with allergies or a cold.

Dx: PCOS and short luteal phase
18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

  • I was told Sudafed was ok and have taken it during all three PGs, I think.  Get the good stuff that's behind the counter from the pharmacist.  You don't need a prescription or anything, just have to ask for it.  I was told just the regular Sudafed so no 12 hour or anything like that.  It usually works great...but only for a few hours...  Sad  Sorry you're feeling lousy!
  • This is what is on my list of approved meds I got from my OB.

Sudafed, Actifed, Drixoral, Chlor-trimeton - for cold, sinus congestion

Cepacol Lozenges, Chloraseptic, Sucrets - for sore throat

Robitussin (plain or DM), Cough Drops - for cough

I've learned though that every Dr is different so you may want to check with yours.

  • I took sudafed when i was sick not too long ago and it rose my BP so high, it was a miserable feeling. :(
  • FYI (and this is off topic):

To those ladies who are planning on breastfeeding.  Just a little bit of advice.  Don't take Sudafed from behind the pharmacy counter, you know, the "real" stuff.  The psuedoephedrine, the drying agent that dries your sinuses, can also dry up your milk.  Instead take the stuff OTC.  My SIL, when she was bfing her youngest, took it and her milk started drying up.  Her Dr confirmed that that's what was drying it up.  Some people respond differently to the psuedoephedrine then others.  I've also read about this in Parents Magazine.  Thought I'd put this out there.

  • My doctor is ok with benedryl and tylenol. but yeah, everyone's dr. has a different opinion about this.
  • My SIL always took the regular Sudafed.

I personally never took anything when I was pregnant with my DD, just suffered through.  The one thing I did use though was a saline nose spray, just to clear out my nose.

  • check with your doctor and drink TONS of clear fluids and look into the Neti Pot for sinus issues. I was off work three days last week because I was so sick and this week, 100% better.

Yes, this is actually something reommended to take when you are weaning to help dry up the milk and prevent mastitis.
