IUI/Injectible Stims Vs. IVF Stims?

It seems like a lot of the same drugs are used for injectible IUI cycles as for IVF cycles.

How is it then that in an IUI cycle they're aiming for 3-4 eggs, and for IVF they're aiming for many more, and they're (ideally) able to achieve that with the same drugs?  Is it just that for IVF the dosage is that much higher and the injects are administered for that much longer than for IUI?

TTC in 2008. Stage II/III endo, Hashimotos hypothyroid, low morph (3%).
2 cycles Clomid/Ovidrel/TI/Crinone=BFN.
IUI #1 - 4 Follistim/Ovidrel/IUI/Crinone = BFN.
IVF #1 - Antagonist w/ ICSI 4/10. 17 retrieved, 5DT of 2, BFN :(
IVF #2 - Long Lupron w/ ICSI 6/10. 15 retrieved, 3DT of 2, BFFN!!
Lap 7/21/10
IVF #3 - Clomid/Antagonist w/ ICSI 10/10. 14 retreived, 3DT of 3, BFP 10/20 but m/c. No HB 11/15/10 - D&C 11/17/10.
FET - 2 blasts, 1 survived the thaw. Transfer 2/19. Beta #1 3/1 375, Beta #2 3/3 885, Beta #3 3/8 4261, Beta #4 3/11 9005. U/S 3/8 1 sac 1 yolk, U/S 3/16 1 heartbeat 114bpm!

Re: IUI/Injectible Stims Vs. IVF Stims?

  • well, i only know gonal-f, but yes, its a dosage thing.     IUI dosages i've seen are around 75iu.    my IVF dosage was 225-300iu.      I stimmed for 8-10 days for IVF (not sure how many days you stim for injectible IUIs).

  • It is the dose and combination of meds that yield higher results for IVF.

For example for my IUI/inject cycle I was on 75 IUs a day of Follistim.  For IVF #1 I was on 150 IUs Follistim and 150 IUs Menopur per day.  For IVF #2 I will be on 225 IUs Follistim and 225 IUs Menopur each day.

  • I don't know the exact answer to this, but I am moving on to IVF in the coming few days after doing five IUIs with gonal-f.

My understanding is that the suppression meds (BCP and lupron) quiet down your ovaries so that they can then be stimulated a whole lot with the injectable drugs (I'll be using Repronex and Gonal-f). You stim longer and with higher doses on IVF since the goal is to have a lot more eggs.

There are other people with better info than me. I know a lot about IUI but not as much about IVF.

Dude, then I'm screwed, because for my IUI cycles I've been doing 375 units of gonal-f. I can't imagine what they're going to start me at for IVF. Frick.

  • From what I understand, it is all basically the same except for sometimes a higher dose & longer stimming. I have to do 200iu usually anywhere from 9-12 days. I wonder what I would have to do for IVF?

my SIL is high FSH, and she's also on gonal-f...  something like 375, but then they also put her on menopur.   so they don't always rely on the gonal-f alone...    i don't know if that makes you feel any better or not!

  • I'm starting my 1st injects cycle at 150 IUs of Follistim...now that seems kinda high!
