we used those super soft paper towels and water for a long long time... (like they do in the hospital) maybe 4 months. i think they say no wipes bc some babies have a real sensitivity to wipes- my friends ds butt was basically raw from the wipes.
Baby wipes (Pampers Sensitive) from day one. Interestingly, Mother/Baby unit did not want us to use them but when Maya went to NICU, they used Pampers Sensitive there. So we just kept it up. No problems thus far. Just make sure you get Sensitive.

Ditto on the Pampers Sensitive here, too, but I did use the paper towel/water for my little guy during that first week or so due to the circ. However, I had a friend who said she used paper towels with water also and raved about the $$$ saved by doing that.
At Hoag they only had the paper towels, and they did tell us in the Baby Care class not to use wipes. But as soon as we got home we started using the Pampers Sensitive, and we didn't have any problems with those.
I did read that you shouldn't use them every time you change the diaper. Especially in the first few months because their potty is not as acid as when they start eating real food.
We used baby washcloths - the gerber super soft ones. I would get it wet with very hot water before I changed her and by the time she was undressed and ready to wipe it was warm, and not too hot. Did this for about 3 weeks then switched to unscented wipes. I just washed the washcloths every night in hot water and oxyclean. I guess I am the only one? Haha.
Re: First 4 Weeks Home

Baby wipes, but only for poop.

We used a soft, disposable cloth and sprayed it with water. It worked out well and then we switched to wipes after a few weeks.
