Success after IF

Can't believe I'm asking this on a public board

Okay, I know its not as "bad" as some posts - but still.  I am usually soooo not a tmi/ bodily functions type of girl, if you know what I mean :)

That said! -- Things are bad, friends. . . and I need to know what you have had success with for relieving constipation!  I've been on Colace for, oh, forever.  My MFM then suggested Miralax.  Um, no, not helping.  I'm drinking lots of water and all that jazz, but we're past that point.  I'm taking the Miralax every other or every third day, but I'm nervous to take it much more often than that in case it all of a sudden decides to work!

Re: Can't believe I'm asking this on a public board

  • I am not sure if you tried this, but I swear by prune juice.  I used colace and it worked, but not quickly.  A few hours aftera big glass of prune juice and everything was good again.  I also eat a bran cereal every morning for breakfast to help keep things regular.

  • Prune juice.

Get it really cold and think about raisins while you're drinking it.

Couple that with some dried apricots and you should be golden!

And.... it's a really normal topic especially on the 1st tri boards.

Just part of pregnancy!  Nothing to be ashamed of.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • Miralax one capfull every day.  It will work.  You're right, sometimes it works a bit TOO well, but it's not actually a laxative, so it's not crampy or painful or anything.  Just don't spend the day where you can't get to a bathroom.
  • I use to eat prunes. I would eat a couple a day and that always did the trick. I tried drinking prune juice but I couldn't stand the taste.
  • Stools softeners work for me, although you have probably already tried that, I'm sorry, that can be VERY uncomfortable!

  • Definitely prune juice.  While in the hospital after giving birth, nothing worked.  I drank a glass of prune juice and within an hour, I had gone.  Good luck!

  • Colace always worked well enough for me. I hated prune juice, but mixed with some apple juice, it wasn't bad at all. Also, coffee always works for me, even decaf while I was pregnant!
After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • When I had my colonoscopies I had to drink a whole bottle of miralax in one day. (well mix and drink it) Plus some other pills too. I would just do a capful or 2 capfuls of miralax, even go for 3 if 2 didn't work. I really don't think it can hurt you because I've had 3 or 4 colonoscopies and my mom has had them too and they always make us take a whole bottle of miralax.  GL!
  • If you mix sprite with prune juice, it almost tastes like Dr. Pepper....  I know I will not win pregnant of the year for this, but when it gets bad for me, I will have ONE cup of regular coffee (I add cream/sugar) That does it for me within 15 minutes. I know no caffeine, but a little for this will not hurt.
  • A lot of stuff did nothing for me, nada, zilch. Milk of Magnesia on the other hand...just one dose and I am all clear.

It's been bad, really bad, but I now swear by Milk of Magnesia. GL!

  • Ditto on the PP's recommendation on coffee. I am not sure what it is, because even decaf seems to do the trick!
After 7 failed IUIs, IVF w/ ICSI worked!!

I am thankful every day for my miracle after infertility.

And thrilled to be pregnant again after FET!

  • Seriously, I'd try McDonalds breakfast. GL!
  • do what it takes... I had an actual hospital stay due to constipationa and YOU do not want then to take care of it...

Take the miralax more often, and drink 2x the water you are drinking now... Like 3 liters a day...

  • I'm assuming you're on a prenatal vitamin. If so, there may be too much iron in it. I was having that problem and my doc recommended taking two Flinstones vitamins a day instead. It has helped tremendously!! GL!!
  • coffee or hot tea.  anything hot seemed to work for me when i was in a bind while pregnant.  i hope you get some relief soon.
  • So most of these remedies just give me gas.  LOL.  Truly.  But eventually they should all work...esp. eating prunes.

I have been drinking DanActive drinks each day and that has been VERY good about keeping me regular.  I hope something works for you - I feel your pain!

  • Thanks for all the ideas ladies!  I do eat Fiber One bars, fiber cereal, etc.  DH keeps saying I should drink coffee - I don't mind the caffeine, but coffee itself just hasn't sounded good to me since pg, but I might have to give it a try.  I need to increase my water intake, for sure, and will try some of the other suggestions as well!
  • start drinking prune juice and eating a high fiber cereal (fiber one, Cracklin oat bran, bran flakes etc). There just may not be enough "bulk" for success with the meds.

  • Miralax worked the best for me, but i had to take it every day.  There was no "suddenly" it's working...no cramps either.  Good stuff.
  • I had a fiber one bar and two apples (or an apple and orange) every morning for the first 15ish weeks - the fruit helped as well.  And water, water, water - I would stand at the sink and drink my first glass, then refill and eat that with breakfast.  Another one before I went out the door, and I carried a canteen all day.

  • I can honestly say that it really hasn't been a problem for me so far... and I think it's because I take probiotics everyday (I use 365 brand from Whole Foods). One in the morning and one at night and I'm feeling really good in that department. I also try and drink lots of water and eat apples, bananas and eat oatmeal with raisins just about every morning for breakfast. Hope you feel better.

  • 3 servings of bran buds cereal a day and you'll be pooping again!
  • I've been pretty much plagued throughout.  I'm sure if I picked one regimen and stuck to it, I could have more success, but I've had intermittent success with these tricks:

Switching from a prenatal to a gummy vitamin (and taking an a la carte Folic Acid for good measure)

Milk of Magnesia (as one doctor put it, they call it MOM for a reason)

Drinking more water than I ever imagined possible

    Apricot nectar (Kern's)

    Eating cherries

    Coconut juice

Virgin pina colada (reasoning that coconut cream must have some of the qualities of cocunut juice)

    Walking

    Prunes

Like I said though, still pretty plagued by constipation.  I can't wait to be regular again!

    Good luck!
