Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If your baby STTN I have a question for you....

So far our LO has been fairly consistent waking up 2 times a night (3-4 hours between BFing)

Just recently he started going in longer spurts, but I have noticed he is chopping up his timing oddly now.  He will sleep for almost 6 hours 9:00-3:00am.  Go back down but then wake back up again in 2 hours.

When your LO started to STTN did this happen to anyone else...long initial sleep periods but then light sleeping in the morning?  I'm just wondering if he is slowly easing himself into a long sleeping pattern and will eventually drop that 3am feeding.  I know it's still very early and I a very thankful for the time he is sleeping, just curious if anyone elses babies did this before they started sleeping for longer stretches.  TIA ladies!

  • Yes, ours did a pattern similar to this.  She initially went 3-4 hours first, then woke every 2 hours after.  Then she one day went 5 hours, then 2 hrs after.  Then 6 hours, then 2 hrs.  Within a week she was 8 hours straight!  Now she is about 10-12 hours depending when she goes to bed at night.  :)

  • Yes, this is what LO did.  That first stretch of sleeping got longer and longer til she STTN.

  • When he first started sleeping 6 hour stretches, he'd have a bottle afterward and go back down 2 more times for 2-3 hour stretches. Then up for a few hours before he'd nap.

Then after he made his way up to 8-10 hours he'd go down after a bottle for another 2-3 hour stretch.   Then up for a few hours before a nap.

Now he sleeps 11-12 hours and he's up for good for a few hours before he naps.

    HTH! :)

  • It sounds like he's on his way to STTN!  That's almost exactly what C was doing (up until a few nights ago.)  Eventually he dropped the 3a wake with increasing frequency, and as of a couple weeks ago dropped it altogether.  He even went past 5 on several occasions, as late as 7:30a.

And don't freak out if he regresses a little - the past 4 nights have been rough here.  Up b/w 2-3a then won't go back down for more than 45 min (and getting him back down is a challenge).  Hoping it's just a growth spurt (and trying to take my own advice and not freak out!)

  • Yup, DD started out this way.  She went from waking up every 2 to 3 hours to sleeping 4 hours straight then waking every 3 hours after that... then sleeping 5 hours straight then waking every 3 hours after that... then sleeping 6 hours straight then waking every 3 hours after that and now she's sleeping 9 to 10 hours straight.  She started sleeping longer around 2 months old and she's been sleeping 9 to 10 hours for the last three weeks or so.

  • yup-  he always has only done one long stretch- then spurts after that.   So he usually gets 11 hrs in at night.  Usually he does an 8 hr stretch, then a 3...   But if he wakes 5 hrs in, he doesn't do another long stretch, but then gets up twice more after 3 hr spurts

  • yup. they both started going longer stretch until about 3:30 (from 10pm)... but would wake up around 6 after that.  Then they just stopped with the 3:30am and slowly woke up later and later- now it's usually 7am.
  • This is good to know, because lo is doing this also... asleep at either 9 or 10, up at 2 or 3, then back up at 5 or 6. hopefully longer stretches are around the corner.
