Can you tell me about it?
Did you do private therapy or go through a state sponsored early intervention program?
How often did you see the therapist and how long did the session last?
How long before you saw some improvement?
Did you work with dc during the session or just the therapist?
How long did they see the therapist before their services weren't needed?
How old was your dc when they started therapy?
Anything else I need to know?
Re: If you've done speech therapy....
Can you tell me about it? He just left EI and now is in the school program. CPSE
Did you do private therapy or go through a state sponsored early intervention program? We went through EI.
How often did you see the therapist and how long did the session last? He had ST 3x 45wk. Now he has one session at home for 45 minutes and 2 at school for 45 minutes.
How long before you saw some improvement? With my son 6 months. But every child is different.
Did you work with dc during the session or just the therapist? Depends. Sometimes he did better when I wasnt in the room. For the most part I was.
How long did they see the therapist before their services weren't needed? N/A he still needs it.
How old was your dc when they started therapy? 17 mos. and I would have referred him earlier but for some reason I didnt.
Anything else I need to know? Not sure...give me specifics and I can try and help. Not only do I have a child in the system I work in EI.
My son was 3 when he started, but in retrospect, it should have been sooner. By the time he started, it was for articulation - he was a "late" talker - not until 2 or so and just hasn't caught up with some of the sounds.
Because he didn't start until 3, he's through the public school system, not through the Early Intervention program. He qualified for once a week, half an hour at a time. It's at the elementary school that's closest to his preschool (which is private, so they don't do it there).
It doesn't take long to see improvement because the best thing that it's done for him is make him aware of his sounds and try to correct himself. Before he did "special school", he wouldn't try to say things right, he'd get frustrated, but now he works really hard at it. Aside from that, I'm not sure 1/2 an hour is doing much - his improvement may be more time than anything.
It's just the therapist - I drop him off, but then she tells me what they worked on and sometimes he gets "homework".
His IEP is for 3 years, so that goes through kindergarten. They will re-evaluate at that point. He wasn't "severe" enought to qualify for summer services and that annoyed me because I didn't like that it just stopped for awhile and restarted when school started again.
I just had my 21-month-old daughter eval'd for speech too - and she qualified for expressive language (I don't know what it is with my kids - but I saw her heading down the same path as him and I didn't want to start too late with her). This time, it's through EI and they will come to our house (in fact, the woman called me and I have to call her back). I'm not sure how long the session is, but I imagine that with a younger child, it's more about teaching techniques to use to the parents than working with the child - so, yes I will be there.
Our kids (my younger one) are similar in age. If you want more details, you can email me at ginandtonic45athomail.com
I think if you are concerned you should definitely call EI and have him evaluated. ?My DS was 20 months when he had his evaluation. ?I was concerned for a few months prior and I didn't have support from anyone on the issue, not my DH, or the pedi or even other family. ?I followed my instincts and sure enough he qualified and now at 27 months I think everyone agrees I did the right thing.?
The speech therapist comes to our ?house or meets us at the park 1x weekly. ?She works with him but does a great deal of teaching with me and even when she is working with him she is acting as a rolemodel for me. ?He is more responsive to me and I am obviously with him a all day everyday so I am his most valuable resource. ?
He has been receiving speech for 6 months. ?His articulation is still poor and his vocabulary is around 80ish words. ?Probably only 15-30 that he uses consistantly and he is just starting to combine words. ?It is a slow process but I am always happy just to see progress and the ST is so encouraging and sees the changes more readily then I can. ?She also has a trained ear so she can hear what he is trying to say much better then I.
I wouldn't wait to have him evaluated. ?It is a win/win situation. ?Either he needs help and he will get it-win, or he doesn't need it and you don't need to worry- big win.
GL and feel free to PM me with any questions.
?
You just call your Early Intervention office and they will set up an initial meeting with you and then another meeting where they come out with 2 therapists/evaluators who will play with DC and do an evaluation while playing. Then they will tell you right then and there if he will qualify. ?It is at no cost to you.
GL?

Don't wait. I'm sorry that I did with my son.
For DD, I called the County Infants and Toddlers Program. They send a team out to the house to evaluate her. They do a "whole baby" evaluation - not just speech, but cognitive, social skills, motor skills, etc.
She was not exactly cooperative - she got mad when they took the pen away they used to see her scribble and imitate making circles and just wanted to draw, so they didn't get much out of her the rest of the time she was there. And I don't think she said a word. They had to go on what I said for most of it (and it says so in the report). They just asked me a ton of questions about her and her typical day.
I'll be interested to see how they do therapy with her vs. with my older son.
Anyone can PM me too - except I tend not to check.
Thanks for the info - i guess i am not familiar with this 'early intervention' program...is this something every state has? I looked it up and there is one for our state in our city - something about 'programs for infants and toddlers with disabilities: ages birth through age 2'....does this sound right?
I would call that number. ?It is usually birth-3. ?They will direct you to the right place if that isn't it. ?But yes, every state either has this or an equivalent so any child can receive services if needed. ?Call and see what they say.?
Thank you so much!! I had the wrong place but I found the right one and it is birth to age 3... i have set up a hearing screening and someone is going to come out next week. THANK YOU!!!! I'm glad I read this post today.
Can you tell me about it? at first i thought because he is learning english and spanish at the same time he was having a speech delay, but now i know its more than this. now he goes to a little center with a bunch of classrooms, he was classified as "severe" he uses maybe 10 words daily, does not repeat words or sounds. the woman to evaluated him was very rude but his therapist is awesome i have a lot of confidence that she will be able to help him.
Did you do private therapy or go through a state sponsored early intervention program? EI program in CA its called the First 5
How often did you see the therapist and how long did the session last? he goes to see her twice a week for 45 mins each session
How long before you saw some improvement? he just started, sorry I dont have an answer
Did you work with dc during the session or just the therapist? just the therapist but there are 2 other children in there with him
How long did they see the therapist before their services weren't needed? he was rec. for 10 weeks, she said if after 20 sessions there is not improvement he will have to go through the school system, but i dont understand because he's only 2 (?) we'll see
How old was your dc when they started therapy? 2.5, so wish i would have started him earlier
Anything else I need to know? i guess my only advice is that if you feel he has a need look into it right away, i am sorry i waited too long.
