Going pacifier-free

After some really rough nights, we have decided with some counsel to go pacifier-free (cold-turkey). DD is very attached to her pacifier to sleep and last night we had some serious crying that was rough on all of us. Does anyone have success stories of cold-turkey quitting? How long did it take to get to "normal?" It is just not good for her to wake up 4-5 times a night needing the pacifier when I know she can sleep through the night. She has trouble napping at daycare, so I've gotten uptight about making sure she gets good sleep at night to make up for it.

Wish me luck!!!

Re: Going pacifier-free

  • Good luck!  We used to put a bunch of them in with her night when she was old enough to grab them on her own.  Then eventually she liked throwing them out and we just wouldn't go back in to replace them, so we were paci free around 9 or 10 months, but that was more her choice due to the throwing out of the crib.

  • Wow, good luck!  We used to say that we were going to quit the paci at 6 months, but it's definitely not happening!  She LOVES her paci, so our new goal is to quit when she starts walking and talking.  :)

  • My niece was a paci-baby and they pretty much went cold turkey with getting her to quit.  She was a bit older but they told her that they were sending her binky to the Binky Fairy for babies that need them.  They even packaged them up and "mailed" them.   The pictures were cute.  I believe my sister-in-law said that it took them a few nights of boo-hooing, the first 2 being the most notable but after that she was able to cope without them.  It's definitely possible!  Good luck and keep us posted!
  • We just got rid of the pacifier (son calls it a butty) at age 3. We were adamant that he would not be taking it to pre-school with him! It took about a week for him to not want it anymore. It's been 6 months since he's had it. He'll ask for it every now and then and I just say "What's a butty?" and he lets it go.  Don't worry! She won't go to kindergarten with a pacifier!
  • From what I've read, babies are only able to self soothe starting at 6 months.  Maybe she's not ready developmentally to soothe herself.  Maybe you could give it another month?

We never used the pacifier but DD sucks her thumb.  I am dreading trying to break that habit.

  • I've known others that have done it at 6  months and it took a few nights.  I've also read in multiple sources that they can begin to have the ability to self-soothe as early as 4 months.  Hang in there.  We need to do this too and DS is almost a year!  (I had sworn originally that we would wean him at 6 months.)  I've also heard/read that the older they are when you do it, the harder/longer it takes.
