TTC After a Loss

? from a soon to be new pet owner

We bring our puppy home Sunday morning.  DH works 2nd shift - so he will only be home alone for a 3 hours on Monday.  Do you think I should take Monday off or come home a little early?

DH thinks it might be a rough night trying to sleep (for all of us) with the puppy being at a strange new place.

Re: ? from a soon to be new pet owner

  • Chances are the new puppy is going to cry the first few nights.  It can definitely be exhausting.  I don't know if you are crate training (I never did with any of my dogs) or gating him into a secured area, but remember to give him a t-shirt that you've worn or slept in so he has your scent.  This should comfort him and give him a chance to get to "know" you.

If it were me, I'd come home early.  You're going to be like a kid in a candy store once you bring him home - all excitement to get home to see him, so you'll be anxious for the time to leave work!

Puppies are so much fun...but tons of work.  The rewards are endless!  Congrats on your new fur baby!

  • no, he should be fine.  are you planning to crate him?
  • Yes, he'll be in a kennel those few hours.  I was worried about him being alone so soon, but he'll have to get used to it sooner or later - right?

  • yeah he will.  i know the feeling though, it's hard.  he'll be fine.  we put ours in the bathroom (big bathroom with attached laundry room) when we leave for any length of time and at night.

trust me puppies are a lot of work, i suggest a puppy behavior class, petsmart offers them.  but they are SO SO SO SO worth it.  a well behaved pet will become a member of the fam quick style.  :)

so excited for you guys and moose!!!  GO MOOSE!!!

  • I'm excited for you guys, too! I agree with Texas, but I also agree that it's hard to stay away. Three hours shouldn't be too bad for him, especially if you leave familiar things with him. (But, really, if it were me, I'd be too excited and leave work early.) Good luck!
  • He might cry and it will rip your heart out,  but he'll be okay. Remember, he has no real concept of time, so when you come home, he'll think you just left.

Oh, sweet Moose! I can't wait for the homecoming pics!

  • He should be fine... He will be very excited to see you when he gets home!!

Make sure that you leave him some toys so he wont get bored Big Smile

    I love pups!

  • I think that he should be fine also.

We crate our dogs and find that a Kong is a crating dog family's best friend!  It keeps the dog busy getting the peanut butter or treats out of it and also provides them with food if they're being crated for any length of time.  My mom also found that covering 3/4 of her puppy's crate with fabric to make it cave-like and then putting a clock that actually ticked nearby was very comforting when they were crate training their puppy. Our dogs prefer to be able to see everything but it's a suggestion if you're having issues!

Good luck and enjoy your puppy!

  • So excited for you!  We got our little guy about a year ago and the first few weeks were pretty tough, but I was in love immediately so I didn't care.  He was 9 weeks when we got him.  How old is your puppy?  If he is at least 8 weeks then he should be able to last about 3 hours in the crate before he has to go out.  I'll try to answer any questions I can for you.  Have fun and good luck!!!
