upset and need advice

Ladies,

I know I don't post very often but I am going to start to be more of an active member and offer more support. However, right not I am really looking for some advice and encouragement. My husband and I met with our RE today for our initial consult. We previously were working with my obgyn for three months. We had all initial tests and were told they were normal. I was on clomid of three months with her that were not successful. Going into the appointment, I was thinking most of the talk was going to be about my PCOS and lack of ovulation at times. We were told by my obgyn that my husband's sperm count was all within normal range. Beginning the consult, the RE said well based on your husband's morphology IVF with ICSI would be our best option. Well....to make a long story short...it turns out that my husband had 0% morphology!! How on earth can my obgyn say that everything was within normal range and then go on and put me on clomid for three months. To say the least, I am livid and very upset.

Do I call my obgyn tomorrow and ask for an explanation??

My husband is doing a repeat semen analysis on Thursday. Is there any other choice besides IVF with ICSI? I am lost right now. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

 Thanks Ladies!

  • I wish I had a whole lot of information for you, but I did want to send you (((hugs))) and hope that they'll have more information for you when you call them tomorrow.
  • I am sorry you're going through this.  A couple of things I have learned are that 1.) not all ob/gyn's are very good at interpreting SA. 2.) SA are supposed to be done at least 10 weeks apart because that's how long it takes for for new S to be made.  I am sorry I am not more help. Good luck with everything!

  • One thing to find out (that might make sense of the situation) is which criteria are being used.  For morphology, there is the World Health Org. (WHO) standard, which is most widely used.  Some labs use the stricter Kruger criteria for normal morphology.  And it is possible for a man to be in the normal range using the WHO criteria and be low or even 0 using the Kruger criteria.

    Good luck!

  • I am so sorry! I have a friend IRL who had the same thing happen to her. The OB told her that she had a blocked tube and that her dh was fine. When they got to the RE they found out she was fine, and her dh had MFI issues! They were shocked too. (BTW - They now have twins from a FET.) I think sometimes OBs do make mistakes. They don't really specialize in IF like REs do. I'm glad you got to an RE who will help you figure everything out :)

    Good luck!

  • I am sorry you're dealing with MFI.

To offer some hope, DH was originally dx with MFI.  After 6 months, 3 SA's (one Kruger), vitamins and clomid, he is back in normal range on motility and while morph is still on the low side, the sheer numbers make up for it.  So....it can be treated...

regarding the OBGYN, i'm not sure what you'd gain if you called.  You won't be able to talk to her anyway probably, b/c doctors never talk on the phone.  And if you did get her on the phone, there's no reply she can give you that would be honest other than 'i messsed up', which she won't say.  I vote, switch OBGYNs and move on.

    GL to you.

  • This is why we push everyone to see REs.

Are his counts high?  Mine had high counts and low morph.  We found he needed to ejaculate more often and then his morph went up.  Morph is a highly contested issue....google it.  All the REs told us before that it would just take longer to get pregnant with low morph.  And the repeat SA might show low morph...with Kruger they take 100 sperm and look for normal morphology so a different 100 might have a different effect.

For what its worth with my ex, I was told for 3 weeks from the OB/GYN that his SA was normal while getting tested and making treatment plans...then we found out he had no sperm!  You are on the right track with the RE now.
