Clubbed foot?

Just got back from our big U/S and our daughter has one clubbed foot. I know I should be grateful she doesn't have any bigger problems but I am totally freaking out. Is this something any of you are familar with? The one person I know who had a child with clubbed feet, her son was in braces til he was 4.?

Re: Clubbed foot?

  • My little cousin, now 7, was born with a clubbed foot ... she had surgery I think when she was 4 or 5 weeks old ... a tiny cast ... the whole bit ...  and then wore  a braise for a few month ... gradually with less and less time with the braise attached to her feet (in tiny shoes of course)... needless to say, today she's a ballerina ... wouldn't know that
  • So I understand you feeling freaked out and not knowing what to expect, since this is my first time posting I'll give a little background on myself. I am 22yrs old, with no clubfoot in my family--until I came along. Back then, my parents didn't find out until I was born, and they were in the dark about clubfoot. Although it is VERY common, not much is known about it and it can be very scary for that reason. I have had a total of 7 surgeries thus far-two were due to infections from a needed surgery. My clubfoot is on the severe side and it is bilateral.

That said, I am able to walk just fine, I can run just not as fast or far as others. I have had a normal life- and doctoring my clubfoot is just part of it. I know my limits and I know what I need to be cautious with compared to a "normal" person. However I want to make sure you are understanding, I have a completely normal life. I am a floor nurse and my biggest issue is that sometimes my feet hurt and I need to take it easy.

if you have any questions feel free to get in touch with me! Your greatest resource is going to probably be people that have gone through it either personally or their child. just remember your baby will be fine and this is just a mild bump in the road!!!

  • What exactly is it? I mean, will LO have problems walking? I'm so sorry...but I'm so happy that there are no other problems
  • My SIL's daughter had a club foot when she was born. I wasn't even married or knew them then so I don't know the details. I can happily tell you at age 4 and 5 she walks and runs completely like a normal child. I would never have known she had a club foot. I did hear of her being in a cast and being carried around all the time but I am not sure of any surgeries and the severity of the problem. I wouldn't stress too much about it.
  • My co-worker had a baby with club foot just over a year ago.  He had surgery very soon after birth, wore a contraption that looked like a snowboard for a little bit, and a brace.  Now, you wouldn't even know that he ever had anything done - he's fine.

  • They told me my DD had a clubbed foot at our big u/s threw me through a major loop I was panicked since I didn't know much about it, but I did lots of research and found out tons of helpful info through the pediatrician. Thankfully when my dd was born she had two perfect little feet :) feel free to PM message me if you want I have a few friends who have gone through this with their kids.

  • Reading what you ladies had to say was very encouraging. I stopped freaking out and did some research and have found its totally treatable. I guess I was thrown off because the doctor that did my u/s was an ASS and gave me no info what so ever.?

I just called my mother to tell her and she goes "oh that's nothing, your brother had that. ?GEE mom, thanks for telling me NOW. I had no idea. And he is totally fine. (he's 13 years older than me so I wasn't around).

  • Oops cut me off... *thanks again for the nice comments.

    ?

Sheena i'm going to send you a PM!

  • My husband had them when he was born and had the surgery when he was just a few weeks old.  He had to wear special shoes and braces through part of his childhood (both feet were clubbed).  The geneticist did tell us that there was a 50/50 shot that our child would have them, however they don't.  We were ready for it and you will be too.  They did not give Colin a good prognosis for walking initially, but he's fine--he works out everyday, plays basketball, etc.  Good luck!!
