tummy sleepers... transition to back?

DS sleeps on his tummy and I want to try him on his back..we haven't in a while..when he was younger he would startle all the time ...I am thinking now that he is older he may not have this reflex as much? I can put him in a swaddleme blanket and try him on his back...has anyone had any success turning a tummy sleeper into a back sleeper?

Re: tummy sleepers... transition to back?

  • I have a tummy sleeper too, I put her on her back and right away she'll turn onto her tummy so I gave up transitioning.

  • DD slept on her tummy since she was 4 weeks old.  We had a bassinet carraige as well, and when we went for walks, she also slept on her tummy.  So, when she was 3.5/4 months we switched to a maclaren stroller and she eventually learned how to sleep on her back when out on walks.  Now she rolls in both directions and I find her in all different positions when checking on her at night.  Side, belly, back, it does not make a difference any more. She used to wake herself up when she rolled onto hr back, but this no longer happens.  I think the stoller helped.
  • We transitioned from tummy to back successfully.  DD actually sleeps better now!  She was sleeping on her tummy in her PnP but now she sleeps in her crib on her back.  We started with the SwaddleMe and used it for about two months.  We now have a unswaddled, back sleeper!  Good Luck!

  • can she roll? If she can roll, just leave her.

I'm assuming she was a NICU baby? (it looks like she was a preemie from your ticker)  We made DS sleep on his back when he came home, even though he preferred tummy in the hospital.  If she has a monitor at home, I'd let her continue to sleep on her tummy.
