2nd Trimester

Any 1st time moms NOT taking birth classes?

Our hospital only offers birth classes on Tuesday nights...and my DH is taking a business class those nights. They do offer a Saturday session, but can't get us in until early December (I'm due Jan 9th), so it's looking like birthing classes aren't an option for us.

If you're not attending birthing classes, what are you doing to prepare? I have a few books, but I know there's only so much you can learn from reading. I'm trying to google for any good videos (other than the ones that show live births, I've seen my fair share of those).

Re: Any 1st time moms NOT taking birth classes?

  • Im not sure birthing classes are an option for DH and I as well...He works a lot and I attend classes two nights a week.  Our schedules conflict quite a bit! But I plan to ask around, read some books, and maybe watch a few documentaries...hope this helps!

  • We are not taking any classes, but that is mainly because my sister is a labor and delivery nurse and my mom was in labor and delivery for 20+ years.. They have given me most of the information I will need to know for the day of delivery. Basically, she says, the most important information to gain from the classes is what all the nurses will be doing and why (such as if you need oxygen) all the monitors, etc. I wouldn't stresss over not taking the classes. And remember, just ask the nurses questions when you are in labor and they should be helpful in explaining.
  • What books are you reading?  I am curious to pick up some reading myself.
  • I will have a c-section (due to hip surgery/issues)....so I think I am canceling my birthing class.  I need to ask the doctor this week, but I see no reason to take it.
  • I'm going natural and not attending a birthing class. I'm just reading the book...Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way By Susan McCutcheon. Even if you don't plan on going natural, it's a great informational book. It tells you in depth about the birthing process and even what the baby is doing...I highly recommend it! I've learned quit a bit about myself and baby from this book and I feel like it's a great tool to use to prepare for my birth. You can get the book at any Barnes and Noble or Borders.

  • I just found a video that seems to have good reviews:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000PLXFSS/sr=/qid=/ref=olp_tab_all?ie=UTF8&coliid=&me=&qid=&sr=&seller=&colid=

It's a 2-disc set that has 6 "lessons", much like a classroom session. I just ordered a used one for $13 on Amazon!  I know I'd never get DH to read a birthing book, so maybe I can force him to sit through this with me Stick out tongue

  • I didnt take any with my first. But my mom had 9 kids so she had all kinds of pro advice to offer! I ended up having a c-section though anyway.
  • I won't be taking classes either; same reason more or less.  Our hospital only offers Wednesday night classes - I'd have to rush out of work and go straight to the hospital in rush hour traffic to make it.  I checked out other programs in the area and it's all about the same...

I will probably read up on it and/or buy a video or two.  I'm not going to stress about it though...birthing classes haven't been around forever and the population seems to be just fine.

Having a doctor that I trust is also part of the plan.  If I didn't trust my doctor and/or hospital I might feel differently, but the reviews and what I've seen have me confident.

  • I took a BFing class with DS and it was pretty much a waste (already knew everything she covered just from reading sites like this).  IMO, unless you're trying for a natural birth, classes are useless, the nurses and docs will tell you what to do and when.
  • We are not taking birthing classes either. I have been taking prenatal yoga classes for a little while and really enjoy those. I am hoping that the skills I learn there will help with breathing techniques.  I have asked a lot of people of their opinions and my friends/family seem to either think they were super helpful or really not helpful and a waste.. I guess it is just personal taste.
  • We are not taking any birth classes, because I don't want to.

I've purchased the Hypnobabies CD set, and will be teaching myself self-hypnosis to control discomfort during labor.  And hiring a doula.

It's my understanding that most hospital classes are geared around teaching you how to be a good patient (quiet, compliant, accept interventions, etc), not how to make choices for yourself and insist that they be followed, and how to stand up for your choices.

  • I didn't. I felt like I had seen enough tv to know how go breathe lol. Your nurse tells you what to do too. I didn't feel scared or unprepared going into delivery at all. I had read Jenny McCarthy's belly laughs, and the girlfriend's guide to pregnancy :)

  • I'm not taking birthing classes by choice... I think they will freak me out about labor & delivery. I would rather just wing it when I get in there. I'm sure that's probably the worst idea ever... but I think being in a constant state of panic will be worse than waiting until the last second. Besides, I'm pretty sure your body already knows what it's doing. And when someone tells me to breathe, I'll breathe. When someone says to start pushing, I'll start pushing. I'm sure the classes offer more than that... but like I said... we're kinda already designed to do this.
  • I am not my hubby works till 8, he can leave early but those classes I hear are not worth it..
