Need recommendation for OB or OB group for high risk

Hi - I am turning 42 this week and just found out we are expecting.  I am 5 weeks pregnant.  I need a recommendation for an OB or OB group who works well with someone who is high risk like myself.  Looking for someone in the metro area (not south metro), but north, east or west.  Also which hospitals handle high risk pregnancies the best.  I had a c-section 14 years ago and am thinking I am probably going to have another.  Thanks in advance for your help.

  • I saw Dr. Hessel with North Clinic and the peri Dr. Saul at North Memorial Hospital. They were great. Also, North Memorial (Robbinsdale) has a level three NICU. They were the first hospital in the world to deliver and care for a baby born at 28 weeks which survived.

  • I saw Dr. Hessel for a high risk thing I had - my midwife referred my to her to handle my issue.

My SIL had Dr. Hessel perform an emergency c-section and said she was good and made her feel at ease.

I don't like Dr. Hessel because she performed a D&C I needed due to a molar pregnancy (which is pretty rare) and when I went for a follow-up appointment to find out if the pathology determined a partial molar (not too bad) or complete molar (not good) - she confused me with another patient.  She said - "so I called you and told you the news"  - um NOPE.  When I asked later why I thought she had called me she said "I had another woman who was WORRIED that she had a molar pregnancy - she was very concerned about it, after the pathology report came back  I called her and told her it wasn't molar.  I would never tell someone over the phone that they had a molar pregnancy."  Then she asked me what kind of birth control I wanted a prescription for.  Since, you know I was just told that I needed to be sure I didn't get pregnant for a year and I needed to be seen weekly for the next 3 months for follow-up blood tests to ensure I wouldn't need chemo.  But I wasn't WORRIED about it - like that other woman who didn't have a molar pregnancy that Dr. Hessel confused me with.  And yeah, I'd love some birth control since now all my plans for my family have changed in the last 3 minutes - let's see can I have a prescription for the NuvaRing that sounds really convenient - B!#%#.

So, Dr. Hessel is probably a fine Doctor - but to me her bedside manner is terrible.  She probably sees lots of women with much worse issues than what I had - so that's probably why she kind of blew through the appointment.  But to ME that was a really, really bad day - and I would have liked some more compassion.

  • I went to MN Perinatal at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. They're great! The nurses were great and so are the doctors! I think the doctors also circulate to North Memorial and they also have a site in Edina off of France Ave (across from Fairview Southdale Hospital).

This. We're delivering our first child (though not high risk) at North Memorial. We were told by our OB (before we switched to midwives), who goes between North Memorial and Southdale, that if something were to go wrong with baby or baby was born premature, we'd be brought to North Memorial anyway.

  • While I am not high risk, I know Fairview Riverside in Minneapolis has a ton of high risk pregnancies and handles them very well.

My sister-in-law was an labor&delivery nurse there for several years and said that many high risk pregnancies are referred there.  I go to the University Specialists group at Riverside and have loved my experience so far.  I personally go to the midwives which I don't know that you could do, but I know they have great OBGYNs there as well.

I also know several people who have delivered there and had good experiences.
