Not eating

Donovan has not been eating well for the past two weeks, I can maybe get 2 bottles into him during the day, so I have been nursing him before I leave for work and before he goes to bed.  He is still really interested in solids, I try to give them to him after he has a bottle. However, since he's been refusing the bottle, I've been giving up and just feeding him so *something* is in his little tummy.  He is going 4-5 hours without eating anything, but not whining like he's hungry or showing any other signs.

I thought it was teething since he got 2 new teeth in the past 2 weeks, but I'm starting to get worried. I'm going to call his Pedi this morning, but I was wondering if you girls had any advice?

TIA!

Re: Not eating

  • Hmm... that's a tough one. I agree with the call to the pedi. Does he drink from a cup yet? If it is teething related, using a cup instead of a bottle can help lesson the suction that hurts those tender gums. It has to be a free-flowing cup though not a sippy cup that creates a vacuum.

  • If you can get puree's in him I would think its ok.  At 8 months Cruz was going 4-5 hours between bottles and would go through spurts when he was less hungry than other times.  If he isn't getting enough food he will be lithargic and sleeping constantly, but babies have a survival instinct that kicks in and they eat when they are hungry.  Could be he just hasn't been real hungry lately?

  • I think going 4-5 hours between feedings is normal at that age, but I can understand how you want him to eat more at one time. Since he does seem to like solids, you could mix pumped breastmilk or formula in with something...we do that with things like avocado, peas, oatmeal and that way he'll get some more calories and nutrients in him.

  • Makenna is doing the exact same thing.  I'm a little worried that she is trying to wean herself from BF.  She only wants solids, and mostly finger foods at this point.  Crying
