neti pot help

Does anyone else use one? I just got one (a cheapie one from Walgreens because it was all that was open...) and tried it out. I don't know if something is wrong with me of the pot.

First it wouldn't really come out and then it did but it was slow, like drip drip drip, finally started flowing and then slowed to a drip again so I took it out thinking it was done but it was still half full. I blew my nose and tons came out. Tried again and same thing. Is it just getting backed up from all the gunk it's dislodging?

Also, it went into my mouth and I just let it drip out into the sink as well since my mouth was open to breathe anyway. How can I avoid that? It was not pleasant with the salty flavor.

Re: neti pot help

  • I dont post here a lot, but I do have one, so maybe this will help a little.  When you tilt your head to need to tilt it to the side and the front, this should keep any from going back into your throat.  You don't really want it doing that since the idea is to flush out your sinus' from one side to the other.  When you are saying that it is doing drip drip, do you mean out of the other side of your nose or out of the pot?  It could have slowed to a drip if it was going down your throat instead of your nostril.

  • I found the only way to not get salt water in my mouth is to actually say "khaa" while doing it. I feel like an arse but it works.

  • If you are really congested it won't flow quickly...

  • thanks for the tips lady. I think it is just that i am really congested and as it flows and dislodges stuff then that is blocking it up from flowing at all if that makes sense.

also, i will try the tilting forward a bit thing to keep it from coming out of my mouth. I'm going to go do it again now before i hop into bed. the past three nights i've slept with a cough drop in my mouth becuase i can't get to sleep for coughing. but i hate the feeling when you wake up of the cough drop stuck to your cheek, its so gross. hopefully this will help.

  • It often will take a couple of days (maybe more) for it to flow well.  If you are really congested it may come out your mouth even if you are tilted correctly.  :(    Also, when I first started using mine, I felt like crap for the first few days because it was loosening everything up.  But just push through it.  It will get better!!

    I pph my neti pot!!

  • When I am really stuffed up, I use it in the shower or right after having a hot shower.  Sometimes it takes some effort to get things moving.
