cleaning plush toys?

As I may have mentioned in the past, Warner spits up all a lot and now that he plays with a lot more stuff, he's puking all over a lot more stuff, including some plush toys--a little stuffed dog, a taggie football, etc. Usually it's just a little bit here and there, but this morning he really went to work on one of them. How should I clean it? The instructions just say to wipe with a damp cloth, but that is not going to cut it here. Do you think I put them in the washing machine and dryer?

Re: cleaning plush toys?

  • I always put them in the wash, no problem. I actually just washed all of DS's  baby toys for the new baby.

  • I usually put them in the wash in a lingerie bag and then let them air dry.  If after air drying they seem a little matted I'll put them in the dryer on the fluff (no heat) setting for a short bit.

  • I usually use washer dryer, but I've also heard that you can surface clean and put them in the freezer.  The surface clean gets the dirt off, and apparently freezing them kills germs and other little micro-organisms.

  • I use the washer/dryer and haven't had any problems.  DS had been sick all last week, and I washed EVERYTHING he played with to make sure all the germs were gone.

  • If you wouldn't be too upset with losing the toy I would try the washer and dryer.  I haven't ruined a toy yet but I always worry that it will fall apart.
