Baby Watching TV

So at this point (subject to change) I don't want DD to watch TV much at all until she is two.  We don't have cable and sometimes we watch TV on DVD, Hulu, or our Antenna.  Anytime a TV is on she stares at it and will try to adjust herself in a position to be able to see it better.  Is this a danger, is this normal?  Do your LOs do this too?

Re: Baby Watching TV

  • My LO has also discovered the tv recently.  I'm not too concerned about it right now because he will only look at it for a few moments before I grab his attention.  He just likes the colors... it is very stimulating!

  • Yes, DD is fascinated by it. Especially when football is on.

  • DS didn't show much interest in t.v. at all until a few months ago. He'd watch it for a few seconds but then play with something else.

Now that he is older though and I have 2U2 it's a life saver. I don't care what the experts say. I keep it in the AM for about an hour on PBS while I'm feeding/changing him and DD.

  • My little boy does the same thing. We have stopped having the TV on as often when he is awake (as much as we can without going crazy).  There's a good article that was posted the other day here...here's the link

  • DS also has a tendency to glue his eyes to the TV...when I see him doing it I'll turn it off and play with him and his toys.
  • DS recently started becoming attracted to the TV, he will try to twist and turn to look at it, he smiles and laughs at it. It has started to worry me too so we don't have the TV on anymore (rarely) when he is awake.

    Exactly this!

  • Yup.  DS LOVES TV.  We try to restrict it though.  I don't want him getting attached to it.

  • My LO loves the tv. She likes the colors and the sound. I'm not worried about it right now. When she is really upset sometimes I turn her to it and she calms down. My pedi said it was fine. It's just the colors that are so facsinating to them and that it's not a sign that she will be a TV junkie.

Once she is old enough to play with toys to stimulate her, I will not let her watch TV.

    Ours too!!!!

I'm not bothered by TV ..... if and when they ARE allowed to really watch it ... there will be restrictions and it's not like I will be using it as a "baby sitter"

  • We watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse together every morning but thats all I 'let' her watch.  If its on she tries to look but the playpen is on the same wall as the TV (we have a big dog) so when we're playing with her toys she can't see it.

This is how I feel too.

The tv has been a life saver for me.  LO would not calm down for anyone but me, so it was really hard for me to go anywhere or even take a shower without rushing because she was crying.  Now MH is much more confident being alone with her because he knows that if all else fails, he can turn on the tv and that along with him rocking her calms her down.

I'm not disputing the study that this article is based on, and we try to keep DS from looking at the tv, but this article is pretty biased and that makes me distrust the author.

  • It's pretty normal. Bright lights, new sounds. We try to keep DS from staring, but a little isn't going to do serious damage IMO. I just don't let him sit there staring at it, and I don't use it as a babysitter.?

  • Sometimes when O is on his playmat in the livingroom and the tv is on, he'll switch attention from his playmat toys to the tv and back. Honestly? It gives me 30 minutes or so to cook or straighten up the counters (kitchen is right there). I have a super clingy baby and if a fewminutes of tv is what it takes for DH or me to get a short break then so be it.
