For those who make pulled pork sandwiches

What cut of pork do you buy?  DH and I are not big meat eaters, but we're trying to mix it up a bit.  The recipe I had called for a shoulder cut, but when I got to the store the guy told me to get a "blade and butt cut" or something??

  • lol @ blade and butt.

i am soooooo not good at picking cuts of meat out. major downfall of my shopping skills. But honestly i am not a big meat eater- so i don't think much about it.

whenever i make pulled pork i always used shoulder- however something tells me the blade and butt (giggle) would have more meat on it.

english- was thinking about you on vacation- even without getting on the bump. how are you feeling? not much time left. how are you holding up?

  • I do it in the crock pot and usually get pork butt (snicker), but shoulder is fine too.  I think pork butt is fattier, but it's tasty!  If you do it in the crock pot you can pick a less desirable cut.

Yeah, there wasn't a single piece of pork that said shoulder on the sticker!  Ugh- whatever I'm sure it'll be fine.  Thanks for the help.

I hope you had a great vacation!  It was kind of slow on here and I thought about how you keep us moving here somedays.  I hope you guys enjoyed your time in VA and got some R&R.

I'm feeling pretty good.  Did you miss my vent post?  I can't remember if it was previous to your leaving.  Anyway, I've been going to the doctor's for the last six weeks, every week for non-stress tests and between that and missing my coffee and the million contractions I've been having I had pretty well had it. I think that the 6 wk mark was a weird time for me: too far out to really do anything (install carseat, bring up swing, etc) but also a short amount of time where I felt like I should be doing more nesting KWIM?

I have much better perspective this week, though. It seems the odd numbered weeks have a "oh my this is coming fast" effect, and the even weeks are my "let's get this baby here" emotions.  Strange I know :)  but thanks for asking!  Trust me, SAHM board will be the first (and only, really) group on the bump to know when this baby comes. I might even post a picture of our happy family!

    **gasp**

  • Yes!  This is how I was planning to do it so I'm happy you buy the butt too...so gross I know.  I cannot let DH know that I bought the butt.  He's so crazy about the cuts of meat, especially pork because he's Jewish. :)  I actually already split the 3 pounds in half and wrapped them in foil and freezer bagged them and threw away the packaging just in case :)

  • I am 90% sure that pork butt is just another name for pork shoulder...I know weird but that is just what they call it!

  • I'm going against everyone.  if you are not generally meat eaters, you're probably not going to like a fatty cut. My DH is very picky like that.  I buy "Whole Pork Tenderloin"  which is less fatty than "Half Pork Tenderloin". I then cut off any chunky fat that I can.   It is typically in a soft cylinder-shaped package about 12" long, 2-3" in diameter. I cook in BBQ sauce (mix in a bit caribbean jerk seasoning and crushed red pepper) for about 5 hrs on med-high in a slow cooker.  Then pull apart and add BBQ.
